Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for an Atmospheric Scientist or Senior Atmospheric Scientist to join our Power Supply team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. We’re working toward our goal of providing 100% clean energy by 2045, and our work plays a critical role in our customers’ lives and in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon. While this position is based at Idaho Power’s downtown Boise location, we offer both flexible schedules and the opportunity to work up to 40% remote. In addition to the meaningful work we do, we offer work-life balance, competitive pay and benefits, an employee incentive plan, and both a 401k employer-match and a pension plan, making Idaho Power one of the best employers in the state.
What does an Atmospheric Scientist do for us?
Idaho Power’s largest generation resource is hydropower, which is also its lowest cost energy source. Idaho Power’s energy mix and customer load are both heavily influenced by weather, which makes understanding weather a critical part of reliably and cost effectively serving our customers. Approximately half of Idaho Power’s energy is driven by weather, compared to a national average of about 20%. To augment water supply for its fleet of hydropower generation, Idaho Power’s Atmospheric Sciences group operates a large and robust cloud seeding program. With increasing concerns of risk associated with wildfire, Idaho Power has a Wildfire Mitigation Plan (WMP), and the Atmospheric Sciences group provides fire weather forecasting and situational awareness to support the plan.
Atmospheric Scientist:
The primary role of the Atmospheric Scientist is to support Idaho Power’s weather needs while being mentored by more experienced Atmospheric Scientists. The Atmospheric Scientist will utilize previously developed tools and techniques to provide meteorological and hydrologic forecasts, conduct weather modification operations, and participate in studies to address meteorology issues important to Idaho Power business. The audience ranges from internal scientific staff, senior management, public and private agencies, and the general public. With guidance from Senior Atmospheric Scientists, the Atmospheric Scientist is responsible for the preparation of specialized weather forecast products for use in stream flow forecasting, seasonal forecasting, renewable energy, and load forecasting, planning and weather modification.

Senior Atmospheric Scientist:
The Senior Atmospheric Scientist applies a mastery of the physical sciences to address technical and scientific questions related to meteorological and hydrologic forecasting, weather modification, climate change and variability, and other atmospheric sciences issues important to Idaho Power business. Sophisticated research techniques are applied to develop and prepare specialized forecast products for use in stream flow forecasting, seasonal forecasting, renewable energy, and load forecasting, planning and weather modification. Serves as a subject-matter expert and mentor for other Atmospheric Scientists. Initiates, oversees, and reviews technical aspects of atmospheric science and climate focused analysis and studies, responsible for managing research being commissioned by Idaho Power with outside contractors that pertains to meteorology, hydrology, climate, and weather modification.
