Job Description
The Associate Study Director will be a key leader within the Genetic Engineering Technologies team that builds strong collaborative internal relationships with Research staff as well as key external customer relationships. This individual captures their project needs, develops study designs, and ensures effective project management, oversight and communication to forward their research while providing a word-class customer experience. They are a key subject matter expert empowering internal staff and positioning JAX as a model development leader to grow customer base and support achievement of financial goals. They ensure accurate project tracking and pipeline reporting and are a key contributor to operational troubleshooting and identifying and driving innovation efforts to maintain cutting-edge scientific techniques and differentiated service offerings while improving capacity and operational efficiencies.


Key Responsibilities


  • Study design and project oversight – This individual will interface directly with customers and customer facing staff (primarily Business/Opportunity Development, RS Project Management, and Technical Support) to assess customer needs and ensure accurate capture of project specifications in a statements of work (SOW). They develop detailed project plans and ensure plans are successfully tracked and seamlessly executed across all touch points (includes but is not limited to GET, Reproductive Sciences, Transgenic Genotyping Services, Custom Breeding) to provide an excellent customer experience. They ensure staff understand and are compliant with all policies and procedures to ensure the most efficient operation and provide customers with the highest quality scientific service while meeting organizational operations and financial targets. They are also a key provider of service pipeline performance reports to senior management with responsibility for using pipeline metrics to identify improvement opportunities.
  • High performance environment – Demonstrates and creates a positive, high performance one-team environment that’s open to change with focused on continuous scientific and operational improvement, innovation and customer service excellence. They drive a culture of ‘services without borders’, working collaboratively across teams to leverage expertise and resources across the organization (within and beyond GET) to maximize success, resource use and positive impact. They ensure a safe work environment is maintained at all times.
  • Scientific support and customer interface – The Associate Study Director is a primary subject matter expert for the GET and RS operational teams, customer facing staff and internal and external customers to support achievement of their goals related to model development. They provide strong leadership and scientific guidance to assist in troubleshooting project challenges and improving quality and operational efficiencies. They empower customer facing staff with technical knowledge to navigate customer interactions and provide seamless support toward a world-class customer experience while supporting achievement of growth financial goals. They also play a critical role in building strong relationships with key customers through internal Research staff collaborations as well as traveling with field-based staff to key customer sites to educate on model development capabilities.
  • Innovation and continuous improvement – The Associate Study Director is a key scientific contributor to the development and execution of strategic innovation and improvement initiatives. The objective to increase capacity, expand product offerings, improve service quality and improve customer experience while reducing costs, forwarding internal research and maintaining the organizations reputation as a scientific leader in the RS-related technologies space. Includes building strong collaborative relationships with internal Research staff, providing strong scientific contribution, development and driving improvement initiatives, participation in research validation data analysis and supporting implementation of new techniques and processes. Includes supporting the establishment, improvement and use of project tracking systems (Share Point, eLIMS, AXAPTA). As a key member of the GET innovation engine, this individual works collaboratively across the organization in a one-team approach leveraging expertise and building effective relationships with managers and thought leaders from GET, Reproductive Sciences, Transgenic Genotyping Services, Custom Breeding, Unit Management, Genetic Resources Sciences, and JAX Research staff toward achieving GET goals and objectives.


Requirements


  • Knowledge of supervisory processes and techniques of leadership as would normally be acquired through at least 4 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent management/supervisory project management and project oversight skills and proven experience with mentoring direct reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead technical teams.
  • Strong leadership skills including a demonstrated ability to build key relationships, influence and motivate others. Must have excellent human relation, communication and listening, negotiation and relationship skills
  • Fluent with genetic engineering technologies, animal modeling, molecular/study design and animal research (preferably rodents) and facility with current bioinfomatic tools. CRISPR experience highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in making important decisions, often under pressure and tight time deadlines, which carry large financial consequences; demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Minimum 2 years in a customer facing or service provision environment with demonstrated success in attaining customer satisfaction and including issue resolution.
  • Knowledge and experience in using process improvement techniques and approaches such as lean six sigma preferred.
  • Ph.D in a life science plus minimum of 4 years’ (or M.S. plus 7 years) experience in an academic setting, a contract research laboratory, pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries, or equivalent experience, with hard core exposure and hands-on experience in genetic engineering.
