Job Description
What You Will Do
As a key member of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) executive leadership team, the Associate Laboratory Director for Simulation and Computation (ALDSC) has responsibility for the leadership, management, oversight, strategic planning, and execution of the Simulation and Computation portfolio at LANL. The Directorate supports the full breadth of LANL missions, from large-scale national security campaigns to single-investigator discovery science. ALDSC stewards the Integrating Information Science & Technology for Prediction (IST) capability pillar. ALDSC has institutional responsibility for high-performance computing resources at LANL and includes the following divisions: Computer, Computational and Statistical Sciences (CCS), High Performance Computing (HPC) and Theoretical (T), including the Center for Nonlinear Studies (CNLS).
The ALD provides leadership for the directorate that includes a staff of approximately 1000, including a very robust student and postdoc population and a budget of approximately $400M. Reporting to the Deputy Laboratory Director for Science, Technology, and Engineering, the Associate Laboratory Director serves as a member of the Laboratory's leadership team and is directly responsible for advancing the LANL mission through simultaneous excellence in nuclear security, mission-focused ST&E, operations, and community relations. The ALD must also embody the Laboratory's culture statement, "how we do our work is as important as what we do." Collaborative partnership with the full breadth of LANL's programmatic missions, especially the nuclear weapons program, and peer capability-stewardship organizations is essential.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to leading strategic and tactical planning and execution; increasing sponsor focus and ensuring deliverable quality and satisfaction of principal customers; developing and implementing institutional plans and executing programs for meeting or exceeding LANL/Department of Energy contractual requirements and performance measures, including a commitment to organizational learning; effectively addressing Laboratory goals for programmatic, business, and operational excellence; maintaining effective working relationships with Laboratory management, ALDSC managers and workforce, internal and external customers, and industry/vendor partners; and an unwavering commitment to recruiting, developing, and retaining a diverse, high quality workforce.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Technical Leadership
Proven ability to lead a complex technical organization. Successful experience as a senior leader of a large organization/program delivering on a broad portfolio with significant fiscal and programmatic responsibilities. Record of personal technical accomplishment, working knowledge and programmatic experience spanning the breadth of ALDSC. Experience handling a variety of constituencies, managing multiple tasks simultaneously and thriving in a complex environment with multiple priorities. Significant experience with DOE and NNSA programs; knowledge of critical missions; and engagement with external scientific research community as well as computing industry partners/vendors.
Coalition Building
Demonstrated ability to build and grow both internal and external organizational relationships, including partnering with key stakeholders, R&D organizations, higher-level managers, direct reports, and other employees.
Personal Leadership
Strong leadership characteristics including personal integrity and accountability, fiduciary responsibility, trustworthiness in relationships, commitment to quality and excellence in programs and operations, commitment to workforce diversity and human resource development, and effective oral and written communication skills.
Disciplined Operations
Demonstrated experience developing and implementing plans or programs to meet or exceed contractual requirements, performance measures, regulations, and laws, including the proven ability to do so while operating within a highly sensitive or classified environment. Experience integrating and implementing tenets of multiple management systems including safety, security, and conduct of operations.
Education/Experience
Advanced degree in a technical discipline relevant to ALDSC required with a minimum of fifteen years experience in related fields.
Security Clearance
Ability to obtain a DOE "Q" clearance, which generally requires U.S. citizenship
Ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance.
Desired Qualifications:
Stakeholder Relations
Successful record of working with Congressional leaders, senior administration officials, and regional constituents in communicating complex institutional messages.
NNSA and Laboratory Familiarity
Demonstrated experience with and working knowledge of DOE, NNSA, and SPP programs and priorities, interfacing with peer Laboratory senior management and a broad knowledge of activities at the NNSA laboratories.
Active Clearance
An active DOE "Q" clearance.
An active TS/SCI clearance.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
