Associate Director, Programs
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Associate Director will supervise the daily programmatic operations within University Recreation. This position will lead all UREC programs (fitness & wellbeing, intramurals, sport clubs, youth camps, adventure education & special events) in ways that demonstrate innovation and convey the great potential these programs have for student health and wellbeing goals.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION INCLUDE:
  • Ensures the design, delivery, and assessment of programs for UREC that promote resilience, learning, and supports student retention and success for a campus of approximately 34,000 students.
  • Cultivates strategic partnerships to address the growing needs of the campus community, ultimately enhancing health and wellbeing across the campus.
  • Develops and executes a vision for UREC programs in partnership with the Executive Director and the unit’s leadership team.

The Associate Director will facilitate strategic and structural shifts to support innovation in UREC programs. There is an opportunity to increase collaboration. The Associate Director will facilitate constructive disruption that engages staff in efforts to re-imagine how we serve students to promote active living.
Increase participation in university recreation programs
The Associate Director will critically examine current policies and practices to identify, address, and remove barriers.
Strengthen and increase strategic partnerships
Promoting health and wellbeing through fitness, sport, adventure programming and special events is a community commitment. The Associate Director will cultivate strategic partnerships in an effort to understand and appreciate unique student population needs and develop initiatives with campus partners. There is an opportunity to strengthen relationships with departments and colleges across campus to increase students’ use of UREC programs and services that ultimately drive retention and success .

ABOUT THE DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS PRIORITIES:

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership and administration (40%)
Assists the Executive Director in the translation and execution of university recreation’s strategic vision. Provides supervision for three Assistant Directors and support for five additional staff in Adventure Education, Fitness, and Sport and Camp Programs. Contributes to the work environment by developing and maintaining positive relationships that support a culture of teamwork and cooperation.
Demonstrates divisional attitudes and priorities in all aspects of work.
Resource management (25%)
Translates parameters and expectations for delegated decision-making set by the Executive Director. Is accountable for efficiently executing tasks and objectives for fitness, sport and adventure programs. Recommends personnel actions for supervision area to the department head and communicates personnel actions to direct reports. Stewards resources (human, financial, physical, etc.) to ensure quality, effectiveness, efficiency, impact, relevance, and alignment with institutional and divisional objectives.
Quality Control (30)%
Ensures programs/services/events/experiences, and all communication regarding these aspects of UREC exude a high degree of quality. Ensures quality in every aspect of the position including fitness, sport, adventure and youth camp programs. Embraces and executes the marginal gains approach and seeks to improve level of all services, events, programs, and experiences in department for continuous improvement every academic year. Participates in UREC programs regularly to ensure they understand the student experience and apply feedback accordingly.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
Other duties as assigned by UREC leadership or Manager of Outdoor Operations. This includes but not limited to efforts that support broad division/institution efforts including at least 40 hours per year spent helping divisional initiatives such as Move-In Day, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Career Expo, Disability Services Finals Testing, other special projects, etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including a minimum of five years of direct supervisory experience, including training and evaluation, and budget management in a recreation setting
  • Master’s degree in recreation/leisure programs, higher education administration, public administration or related field from an accredited institution of higher education
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated group facilitation experience
  • Eight or more years of professional staff supervision
  • Experience working as part of a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team
  • User experience (UX), design-thinking, or other program/organizational development and innovation expertise

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS:
Ability and willingness to occasionally work evening and weekend hours and a flexible schedule as needed.

Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
