We are dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic community and enthusiastically encourage applications from individuals who can contribute to this mission. The candidate must possess a Ph.D. in Communication, Human-Computer Interaction, Media and Technology, Media and Society, Media Arts, Emerging Media, Computer Science, or a related discipline by the beginning of the appointment, August 15, 2024.
Candidates are expected to conduct research in immersive media fields, covering areas such as enhanced storytelling, training and simulation, health care and medical uses, ethics of immersive technologies, serious games/education, audience engagement, accessibility, social impact, immersive design, and communicative behavior in immersive contexts. The focus of the research will be to explore the potential of immersive media like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), in contributing to these diverse sectors, while pushing the boundaries of how we understand and employ these technologies. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated record of excellence in research in the extensive field of immersive media, incorporating the various research areas mentioned.
The University of Miami hosts a thriving ecosystem dedicated to immersive technologies, which includes key elements such as a fully operational XR studio staffed by professionals, a comprehensive community of researchers and instructors with a keen interest in XR, and a robust internal grant system to support faculty research in this innovative field. We also provide a university-wide XR equipment loan program for students and faculty, have established research collaborations with our medical campus, and host an XR research day to further promote academic exploration in this area.
A significant part of this vibrant ecosystem is the VR Learning Initiative - a university-wide endeavor focused on enhancing educational experiences through the development and application of immersive media technologies. This initiative reflects our commitment to pioneering immersive learning experiences, bringing a new dimension to education and engagement. Our undergraduate and graduate students' high interest in immersive technologies further enriches this dynamic academic environment. UMVerse, the University of Miami's XR Initiative, serves as a strategic roadmap at the presidential level, highlighting our prioritization of these groundbreaking technological advancements. Candidates with interests at the intersection of games and simulation, UX/UI, or social impact are particularly encouraged to apply.
The faculty member will be housed primarily in the newly formed Department of Interactive Media (https://interactive.miami.edu/) and will also have responsibilities in the Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC). The Interactive Media department is a multidisciplinary research and teaching community encompassing virtual reality, games, user experience, interaction design, data visualization, and allied disciplines offering two minors, a bachelor of science and a master of fine arts.
IDSC (https://www.idsc.miami.edu) is a newly created university research organization rapidly growing its capacity. IDSC focuses on defining new knowledge areas and disciplines that can take advantage of data and computation, enhancing the use of data and computational methods in existing disciplines at the University of Miami, and helping to educate the public at large about the intelligent and responsible use of data by developing programs at all educational levels.
