Job Description

Role Title: Assistant Head of School

Fair Labor Standards Act Classification: Exempt, 12-month position

Reports To: Head of School

Westside Montessori School (WMS) is searching for an Assistant Head of School. WMS is searching for candidates who are passionate about collaborating with and supporting teachers and school staff. The Assistant Head of School prospect should have a personal educational philosophy that aligns with Montessori principles. We are particularly interested in candidates who have instructional coaching experience and Montessori teaching experience. In addition, strong candidates will possess knowledge of and experience with best practices in school improvement processes. Candidates who are team-oriented, systems-oriented, lifelong learners, and committed to culturally affirming school culture and instruction are encouraged to apply.

Primary Functions

●Leads the program’s quality assurance process for curriculum and instruction (tier 1 instruction)

●Engages teachers and teaching assistants in an instructional coaching cycle based on Montessori principles and research-supported best practices

●Collaborates with the Head of School on policy analysis

●Collaborates with the Head of School and administrative team in building systems and procedures that align with policy

●Collaborates closely with the Head of School and Student Support Director on instructional programming

●Continues to support teachers’ proficiency in data-based (qualitative and quantitative) instructional decision-making

●Observes classroom instruction to gather data used to inform individual staff coaching plans

Maintains student privacy and communicates the importance of student privacy to staff.

Facilitation of Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings

●Develops the yearly professional development calendar in collaboration with the Head of School and the Student Support Director

Professional development on a variety of topics, including best practices in Montessori education, culturally responsive curriculum, curriculum modification to meet diverse student needs and other related topics

Leads and collaborates with staff in the admissions process

Supports and collaborates with various stakeholders in the school accreditation process

IOWA testing coordinator

●Staffs classrooms with substitutes when necessary

Qualifications

The well-grounded candidate will have the following qualifications:

●Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction

●Montessori Teaching Certification and/or Experience teaching in a Montessori classroom

Passion and commitment to the principles and goals of Montessori education

Has demonstrated the ability to work effectively under the direction of others

Has demonstrated the ability to work cooperatively with others

Has willingness to assume any responsibilities appropriate for the position

Ability to adapt to the changing needs of children and the school environment

Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, and other staff members

Experience coaching, motivating, and influencing others

Is well-organized and has strong time management skills
