Job Description
JOB INFORMATION

Assistant Golf Course Superintendent positions supervise and participate in the work of crews engaged in the maintenance of the turf, greens, aprons, tees, bunkers and other landscaped areas of City-owned golf courses; inspect course conditions on a daily basis; program schedules for irrigation systems; manage fertilizer and chemical applications; and perform other duties as assigned.

NOTES:
  • Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
  • 5% effective 1/1/24
  • 2% effective 1/1/25
  • 4% effective 7/1/24
  • 5% effective 7/1/25
  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego city Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:
  • Two years of full-time paid greenskeeping experience at a golf course.
  • One year of full-time paid greenskeeping experience at a golf course AND two years of full-time paid grounds maintenance experience.

NOTES:
  • Qualifying greenskeeping experience at a golf course may include maintaining, mowing, and fertilizing golf course greens, aprons, tees, and fairways.
  • Renovating lawns
  • A vocational or trade school certificate in Agronomy, Horticulture, Golf and Sports Turf Management or a closely related field, may be substituted for a MAXIMUM of six months of the required grounds maintenance experience.
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
  • Qualifying grounds maintenance experience must include at least ONE of the following:
    • Mowing, cultivating, or planting lawns, shrubs, trees, or ground covers
    • Pruning trees or shrubs
    • Renovating lawns
  • Associate's Degree or higher, or Community College certificate in Agronomy, Horticulture, Golf and Sports Turf Management or a closely related field, may be substituted for a MAXIMUM of one year of the required grounds maintenance experience.
  • Applicants who do not have a certificate or an Associate's Degree as specified above may substitute completed course work that is directly related as follows: One semester unit = 69 hours of experience/one quarter unit = 46 hours of experience (one year of full-time experience = 2080 hours).
  • Mowing, cultivating, or planting lawns, shrubs, trees, or ground covers
  • Pruning trees or shrubs

CERTIFICATE: A valid Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) in Landscape Maintenance issued from the State of California Department of Pesticide Regulation will be required within nine months from date of hire.

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
  • Professional Golfers Association (PGA) or United States Golf Association (USGA) agronomic tournament experience.
  • Experience supervising crews responsible for greenskeeping at a golf course, general landscape maintenance or equipment repair.

SCREENING PROCESS

If you are successful in this initial screening process, your application will be reviewed for applicable education, experience, and/or training to ensure all minimum requirements have been met. Successful candidates will be placed on a list which will be used to fill position vacancies during the next six months (180 days). For each vacancy, only those candidates with the most appropriate qualifications will be contacted by the hiring department for an interview.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes that are applicable to this job, which may include but are not limited to the following: Confirmation of citizenship/legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review/exam (which may include drug/alcohol testing); reference checks; and a fingerprint check. The fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. Certain positions may require additional screening processes which may include a polygraph examination and/or background investigation. All of these processes must be successfully completed before employment begins. A positive test for alcohol, illegal drugs, including marijuana, or inadequately explained prescription drugs, misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of pertinent facts in any step of the screening/selection process may be cause for disqualification and/or termination of employment.
