Job Description
Qualifications Shall Include The Following


The City of Novi Fire Department is seeking interested and qualified candidates to apply for the position of Assistant Fire Chief. This position is an appointed administrative officer position, and the successful candidate will report directly to the Fire Chief.


  • Seven to ten (7-10) years of full-time fire management and supervisory experience with at least five (5) years of experience at the rank of Lieutenant or higher.
  • Ability to work closely with the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police, Fire Chief, Assistant Chiefs of Police, City Manager, elected officials and others.
  • Must meet the Personnel Employment Standards of the City of Novi and the Novi Fire Department.
  • Michigan Bureau of Fire Services Fire Fighter Training Division Fire Instructor I, Fire Officer I, II and III or Company Officer I, II and Fire Officer III Certifications or able to complete within one year of appointment.
  • National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer or graduate of a Fire Staff and Command program preferred.
  • Ability to apply ethical leadership standards to direct the daily operations of a professional Fire Department with a diverse work force.
  • Has a record of continuing education, professional association involvement and similar activities, having kept abreast of modern and innovative fire suppression and prevention methods.
  • NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800 certifications.
  • Active participation with residents, businesses, and others in the community.
  • Possess the knowledge and skills required to set goals and standards to administer and evaluate the efficient and effective operations of Fire and EMS services.
  • Michigan Bureau of Fire Services Fire Fighter Training Division Fire Fighter II certification or able to complete within one year of appointment.
  • Ability to retrieve, analyze, and formulate data driven decisions which enable efficient and effective deployment of Fire and EMS resources and assets.
  • Completion of the Blue Card Command Training program within one year of appointment.
  • Possess an understanding of current Fire/EMS operational philosophies and practices and the ability to apply contemporary methods of problem identification, evaluation, and solution.
  • Extensive knowledge, experience and training in Leadership.
  • Demonstrated history of developing new concepts and ideas and implementation of these concepts into the daily operations of the organization.
  • Has a demonstrated record of successful recruitment, staff selection, team building, and effective communication with Fire Department employees. The successful candidate must have a positive attitude and recognize leadership at all levels of the department.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science, Public or Business Administration or related field required with achievement of a Master's Degree preferred.
  • Understanding of a wide variety of technical applications in the delivery of Fire, EMS & Emergency Management operations.

The selection process may involve any/all of the following examinations:


  • Advisory board interview comprised of department directors and community leaders
  • Interview with the City Manager, the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police and Fire Chief


Hiring Salary Range: $90,000 - $117,000 DOQ Benefits provided: Generous Paid Time Off Bank, City contribution to 401a Defined Contribution retirement account, City contribution to Retiree Health Savings Account for post retirement health care expenses, optional 457 retirement savings and Roth IRA plans also available.
