Department
Shelton Leadership Center

About the Department
The General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center (SLC), founded in 2002, develops the next generation of values-based leaders in partnership with corporate, governmental, educational, non-profit, and youth development organizations. Our mission is to inspire, educate, and cultivate leaders committed to integrity, ethics, and service. Our core values include compassion, integrity, and social responsibility.

We offer signature programs such as the Red Hat Shelton Challenge for high school students, the annual Shelton Forum professional conference, Shelton Scholars premier scholarship program, and the Chancellor’s Leadership Development program for first-generation and/or rural college students. We also provide leadership programming for pre-college, college, and professional organizations, along with two leadership minors for NC State students.
As a connector across all colleges, the SLC serves as a hub for leadership opportunities, offering up-to-date information to external sources and facilitating collaboration for internal University partners.
The Assistant Director of College Programs will create and implement programs at the SLC that foster the growth of students as values-based leaders throughout their tenure at NC State University.

Their primary responsibility will be managing our Chancellor’s Leadership Development Program (CLDP), which was established in 2017 through a collaboration between the SLC and the NC State University Office of the Chancellor. The CLDP aims to offer first-generation college students and/or students from rural counties in North Carolina a pathway to thrive academically and beyond .
The CLDP is a structured two-year program (with an optional third year) for incoming first-year students who are either first-generation college students or from rural counties in North Carolina. The program provides various benefits, including leadership courses, retreats, advising sessions, peer coaching, mentorship opportunities, participation in leadership seminars and events with the university Chancellor, scholarships, domestic and international service trips, the development of a web-based leadership portfolio, and potential leadership roles within the program. Peer mentors and faculty/professional mentors are assigned to support the students throughout their CLDP journey.
