Job Description
JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Director of Academic Advising & Retention in the Center of Student Engagement & Achievement (SEA) is involved in academic advising and academic administration. The Assistant Director of Academic Advising & Retention will work closely with the Director of Academic Advising & Retention to monitor student's academic records, uphold academic policies, create early alerts for underperforming students, promote student success, review academic standings (including academic probation, suspension, and dismissals) at the end of each semester for advising caseloads, be knowledgeable about major and minor degree programs, and assist in supervising the work activities of the Academic Advisors and student workers/peer advisors. The Assistant Director will be responsible for training and onboarding new employees and promoting professional development opportunities for all employees supervised. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists Director of Academic Advising & Retention in providing leadership for daily office procedures, office events, high-level administrative processes, student orientations, and advising/registration activities. Manage a caseload of students for academic advising. Provides academic advising guidance to support student retention and progression initiatives Identifies and helps resolve obstacles impeding the academic success of students (or a particular subset of students, for example, probation students) Helps to provide solutions for students' academic and personal issues/concerns and provides referral/intervention services Explains academic policies, procedures, and guidelines to students to meet their educational goals Educates students about the value of academic advising and the importance of the registration process Assesses advising practices and programming Maintains appropriate student records and documents student interactions Utilizes advising technology systems to manage student data Identifies and implements innovative strategies, and assesses effectiveness in meeting the University's strategic planning goals to increase student retention and success Serves as point of contact or lead for one or more projects/initiatives, providing assessment/evaluation data Will oversee, train or mentor-student assistants, peer advisors. Other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: Knowledge of academic culture, policies, and procedures Knowledge of university personnel and budget management policies. Knowledge of higher education practices and standards. Knowledge of current and developing trends in student retention and success. Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority. Skill in the operation of computers and job-related software programs. Skills in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the faculty, staff, and the public. Skills in oral and written communication. GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title III guidelines, and university and Board of Regents policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. This position develops department guidelines. SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position supervises all Student workers and Peer Advisors. Supports the director with the supervision of the Academic Advisor. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree and three to four years of relevant work experience in academic support, advising, or student support services. Experience providing student-centered vision and leadership within a higher education setting. Possesses knowledge of strategic planning and research needed to support student services.
