Assistant Director for Residence Education (Student Services Professional 2 – MR09 )

The primary purpose of the Assistant Director for Residence Education is to lead the educational and administrative efforts for one area of campus within Housing and Residence Life. This position is responsible for recruiting 7 Resident Directors, Graduate Assistants, full-time administrative staff, and 100+ Resident Assistants in order to create a campus community that is conducive to the academic, personal, and social growth of students residing in campus housing.The Assistant Director is a key coordinator of formulation of student learning outcomes, providing educational opportunities to students, and assessing that learning is a systematic way, consistent with SACS requirements. This position is a key coordinator in the retention, progression, and graduation of students. The Assistant Director will focus on one of the 3 key administrative areas in Housing and Residence Life, that are staff training, staff recruitment and selection or Student Conduct, Clery reporting and academic initiatives; the campus community is designed for over 3500 students.


Duties And Responsibilities


Staff Supervision & Training


Supervise 3-4 full-time Resident Directors, oversee the supervision of up to 2-6 Administrative Assistants, up to 3 Graduate Assistants, approximately 40-60 RAs, and numerous student staff; coordinate, or assist with, staff training for full time and student staff throughout the year (weekly, monthly, & semester basis); evaluate full-time and student staff's job performance.


Student Development & Education


Responsible for designing, implementing, and revising a curricular approach to residential education, using an outcomes-based learning model, to support the retention, progression, and graduation of students; assess, or assist in the assessment of, all educational initiatives within Housing & Residence Life; responsible for co-maintaining Living and Learning Communities, by way of supervision of Resident Director, staff hiring, day-to-day supervision, and problem-solving; collaborate with Housing and Residence Life, Academic Affairs, and Student Development, as appropriate; advise, or assist with, Residence Hall Association (RHA), Community Councils, and Resident Assistant Council (RAC).


Administration


Attend various meeting, oversee departmental committees, and serve on university committees as needed; manage short and long-term projects, and see them through implementation; review and revise publications, including Residence Life training materials, the housing web page, and others; assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures; manage area budget(s) related to educational and training initiatives, as assigned; responsible for, or assist with, the day to day operation of summer school, camps and conference housing to include check-ins, check-outs, and staff supervision; extensive and intensive planning for long-term and academic year projects during summer (Peak time: May-August); perform other duties assigned, including autonomous decision making and authority in regards to Residence Life matters in the Associate Director’s absence.


Conduct & Crisis Management


Available 24/7 for crisis situations and offer immediate support and resources to students and staff involved. Participate in an on-call rotation; update appropriate supervisors in a timely manner of situations that arise; coordinate or assist in the coordination of the student conduct process, student of concerns referrals, and Clery reporting; serve as a conduct hearing officer; advise individual residents, students, and student staff. Meets with individuals on a regular basis for conflict mediation/resolution, discuss concerns or disciplinary action.Must make judgments about various issues and refer to the appropriate resources, if necessary (e.g., Counseling, Dean of Students, Office of the Registrar, and Bursar).


The Ideal Candidate Will Possess The Following


  • Knowledge of tenets of a residential curriculum.
  • Ability to handle high-volume administrative tasks in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn, department and university policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work within a collaborative environment and with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of how learning occurs (Bloom's taxonomy, etc).
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors degree in relevant field; 3-5 years of experience of full time experience in Housing & Residence Life or Student Affairs (Student Conduct, Student Activities, Leadership Development, Student Affairs, or related).


Preferred Qualifications : Masters degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, Education or relevant field; experience working in staff training, staff recruitment and selection, or conduct and academic initiatives.
