Job Description
Overview:
The Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Students is primarily responsible for assisting the Deputy Dean in the day-to-day management of the undergraduate disciplinary system and for helping in the office’s efforts to educate students about community standards of conduct. The assistant dean assists with the management and disposition of misconduct cases, including violations by undergraduates of policies on academic integrity, hazing, alcohol, drugs, assault, theft, health and safety, disorderly conduct, and other interpersonal misconduct, working closely with faculty, Public Safety and other staff to gather relevant information, prepare cases and ensure adherence to all applicable policies and procedures.
Responsibilities:
As an assistant secretary to the Faculty-Student Committee on Discipline (COD) and a member of the Residential College Disciplinary Board (RCDB), the assistant dean may manage first responses to reports of student misconduct, conduct and oversee investigations, coordinate academic and behavioral cases, and help train investigators, adjudicators and advisors. When the Deputy Dean has a conflict, the assistant dean may serve as one of the panelists on hearings of alleged violations by undergraduate students of the University sexual misconduct regulations and of Title IX of the Education Amendments of the 1972 Civil Rights Act. The assistant dean may also provide guidance and advice to the Honor Committee student chair and to investigators regarding the intake, investigation, adjudication, policies, procedures and recording of alleged violations within the University Honor System.

The assistant dean helps oversee the disciplinary work of the Residential College Disciplinary Board, providing guidance to seven assistant deans for student life and assists with training and supervision of a team of University Investigators (separate from the University Investigations Unit). The assistant dean works closely with the judicial coordinator to prepare documents for the Committee on Discipline or Residential College Disciplinary Board, draft annual reports regarding discipline cases and statistics, and manage the creation, maintenance, and archiving of permanent student disciplinary records in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and University confidentiality and privacy policies.

In the course of managing discipline cases, the assistant dean may work with the Department of Public Safety, the Office of General Counsel, and the office of the Vice Provost for Institutional Equity and Diversity (Title IX Coordinator), the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School, the Sexual Harassment/Assault Advising, Resources, and Education (SHARE) Office, the Registrar’s Office, the Office of the Vice President for Campus Life, the Office of Information Technology, the deans and assistant deans in the residential colleges, and the Department of Athletics.

The assistant dean may assist with responding to requests for disciplinary certifications and records and with special projects, assignments, and committee work, as well as serving in the emergency on-call rotation and performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education and experience requirements

The position requires an advanced degree in an appropriate discipline, J.D. preferred, and at least six years of relevant professional experience. Demonstrated experience conducting investigations and adjudications of student conduct matters in a university setting and knowledge of and experience with issues related to academic integrity, community standards in higher education, alcohol and other drugs, and sex discrimination including sexual misconduct and gender-based violence is preferred.

  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills with an emphasis on education and training for a variety of constituencies;
  • The ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information;
