Description


The Assistant City Manager is a professional position responsible for management and administrative support to the City Manager, staff, and governing body. Responsibilities involve oversight of the Community Development Department, including: Augusta Municipal Airport, planning & zoning, code enforcement, building inspection, and economic development functions.


A key member of the Citys senior leadership team, the next Assistant City Manager will be someone who is interested in and passionate about leading people and making a lasting impact on the community through professional management of the Community Development Department.


The position requires highly developed administrative, technical, and interpersonal skills, polished communication and presentation skills, and the ability to perform well under pressure, meet deadlines, and develop and maintain credibility and trust within the department and amongst City staff, the public, elected officials, and regulatory agencies at the local, state, and federal levels.


The successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge and experience in the management of skilled technical workers with a well-rounded base knowledge in the areas of construction project management, public works, streets, parks & recreation, and airport management.


The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills and be able to communicate complex technical and administrative issues to laymen without any technical experience. Highly developed interpersonal skills are a must for leading and effectively communicating with employees across this diverse department with its fragmented locations, facilities, and responsibilities.


The Assistant City Manager will manage personnel, budget, programs and activities with an eye for continuous improvement to meet the needs and expectations of the community and its residents. A strong, collaborative and visionary style of leadership, both engaging and personable, emphasizing the needs of the organizations internal and external customers is essential.


Knowledge


  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with a multitude of requests, interruptions, varied tasks, critical deadlines and evening meetings.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Advanced writing and communication skills.

  • Hears normal tones, with or without correction.
  • The employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to sit, and occasionally stand and walk.

Environment


Work is performed in a typical office environment which requires sitting for extended periods of time, reaching, repetitive keyboard motion, occasional prolonged standing, frequent use of telephone, and communicating with employees, consultants, and citizens. The noise level is usually quiet. Requires repetitive motion tasks, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, and light lifting to perform the essential functions of the job. Requires the ability to handle multiple concurrent t sks and constant interruptions. Must be able to occasionally leave the area for meetings and delivery of information. Must be able to work well in tense and/or busy situations. Must be available for participation in early morning, evening and weekend meetings.
