The Role: Assembly Technician - Birmingham, AL

As a STERIS IMS Assembly Technician, we will train you to assemble parts and pieces used in the repair, and restoration of surgical devices and instruments. As an Assembly Technician, you will be working at our dedicated assembly facility at our campus in Birmingham, AL!

The general responsibilities of Assembly Technician are as follows:

  • Our technicians work in comfortable, bright, lab like environments.
  • Accurately examine, test and troubleshoot equipment/tools for defects and other issues.
  • Working hours are 6am - 2:30pm. (Overtime, including work on Saturdays may be required.)
  • Assemble and construct parts, pieces and other components from various kits/sets that will be used in the repair/restoration of medical devices such as endoscopes.
  • Work with equipment and small machinery such as microscopes, grinders, sanders, and sharpeners. Please note that many objects and tools will be sharp and are required to be handled with care

  • To accomplish the assembly process, you will follow highly detailed instructions and follow strict procedures to ensure uniformity, safety and overall medical device compliance. Remember, these devices and instruments are being used in surgical/hospital settings and require the utmost care, and attention to detail to ensure the safety of patients!
  • Additionally, you will be required to complete workplace organization audits, abide by all STERIS safety, health policies and procedures.

What skills, experience, and abilities will make you successful in this role?

We recognize that this is not a common role, nor are there many other companies that do what we do. For this reason, we know that there are many different jobs, trades, and transferrable skills that you can bring to the table that will allow you to be successful here at STERIS IMS! Generally, successful candidates and employes have the following general skills, experience, and abilities:

  • Comfortability doing work that is often repetitive in nature. (Doing the same thing/work multiple times.)
  • Comfortable sitting, standing, and bending frequently or for extended periods of time.
  • Good hand/eye coordination with the ability to handle small (often very small) parts and equipment for long periods of time
  • Able to read, and understand detailed schematics, instructions, and diagrams.
  • Most importantly, you can follow instructions and stick to strict procedures and processes.
  • A Highschool Diploma or GED is required.
  • Precision use of your hands with a full range of hand manipulation or dexterity
  • Must be able to work overtime and weekends (Saturdays) as required depending on business needs/customer demand.
  • Comfortable with and have general computer use skills.
  • Minimum 1 year of overall work experience
  • Amazing attention to detail. (You can notice things others usually don't!)
  • English language proficiency

  • Nail Technicians - Yes, you read that correctly! Fast, but detailed and intricate work, and you've likely used filling tools and sharpeners!
  • Others include: Jeweley repair, Dental Lab Technicians, and Crafts Hobbyist
  • Mechanic work - Car, Machinery, etc. you're curious by nature and enjoying troubleshooting until everything is back in working order.
  • Cellphone/Electronics/Appliance Repair - You're used to working with small parts and pieces and enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together.
  • Experience working in any trade such as woodworking, ironworking, general construction, HVAC, CNC/Lathe/Mill work
  • Assemblers - Comfortable with repetition, used to following detailed instructions and diagrams.
