Position Overview

The Butler Libraries Professional Archivist assists in the growth and administration of our Special Collections, Rare Books and University Archives department. Arrangement, description, and management of physical archival materials and growth of digital collections are the main responsibilities, along with outreach, instruction and reference/research support, working with the Head of Special Collections and one part-time staff member.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and execute organization and preservation of born-digital materials with archival best practices
  • Serve on Library committees and groups as assigned
  • Review, revise, or create metadata; create, organize, maintain and display collection guides/encoded finding aids according to best practices and standards
  • Contribute to identifying materials for and creating exhibits in various formats
  • Hire and train student assistants or interns for both physical and digital collections
  • Participate in outreach and collaborative projects with various Butler University departments as well as external community partners
  • Contribute to departmental planning, policy development, workflows and training, as well as project management and resource allocation decisions
  • Identify, prioritize, and prepare materials for digitization
  • Inventory, assess, arrange, and describe collections of various formats, and identify or attend to preservation and conservation needs for these materials, along with their housing and care
  • Assist researchers in use of collections; perform reference services for internal and external patrons in person, over the phone, and via email; assist or lead instruction sessions on rare or archival materials

Required Qualifications

  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Apps, CONTENTdm, LibGuides, etc.
  • ALA-accredited master's degree in library/information science or equivalent training in archival theory and practice
  • Knowledge of archival material preservation best practices (handling, storage, housing, etc.)
  • 1-2 years relevant work experience
  • Professional ethics and standards regarding discretion and judgment on handling archival materials
  • Professional knowledge of archival and manuscript processing practices, allowing efficient accessioning of collections
  • Familiarity with Omeka, ArchivesSpace or other archival display and information management software
  • Experience with library and archival metadata standards (EAD, DACS, MARC, Dublin Core, LCSH, etc.)
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects, prioritize work, and collaborate with a variety of colleagues and university contacts
