These positions are for our Apprentice Development Technician program at the Tucson Proving Ground, one of Caterpillar’s premier research and validation facilities. This role is an exciting vocational opportunity in a highly multidisciplinary environment. Apprentices will spend time learning fabrication, machine maintenance, test setup, instrumentation, and heavy equipment operation. This role is very hands-on. Applicants should have an interest in working around large mining equipment.

Job Duties:

• While working on new products, identify potential issues, potential system and component problems, potential maintainability problems, and potential failure modes. Communicate observations and findings to engineers and make suggestions for improvement.
• Provide input to supervisor and team for continuous improvement (CI) and capital projects to improve safety, quality, velocity, and cost. Aid supervisor in the implementation of other employee’s CI ideas
• Assist an experienced development technician in the execution of operational test plans. Follow written work instructions, repair manuals, engineering drawings, engineering specifications, and solid models for assembly of complex machine assemblies.
• Learn and develop and understanding of machines and machine systems to perform troubleshooting of malfunctioning components, systems, and machines.
• Learn and engage in Caterpillar's culture of safety and participate in efforts and activities to continuously improve the safety of operations.

Mechanic Program

The TPG Mechanic Apprentice program is an amazing opportunity to grow your skills and work with world class mechanics at Caterpillar! As an apprentice mechanic at the Tucson Proving Ground, you will work with an experienced mechanic to configure large mining equipment based on an engineering developed test plan. Preparing the machine for test could be as straightforward as removing a panel or it could mean disassembling the entire machine down to the frame. In this challenging role you will learn all about Caterpillar mining equipment and the engine, hydraulic, electronic, and powertrain system that make the equipment function. This is a critical role that will require critical thinking and a desire to be hands on.

Instrumentation Program

The TPG Instrumentation Technician apprentice program is an amazing opportunity to grow your skills and work with world class instrumentation technicians at Caterpillar! As an apprentice instrumentation tech at the Tucson Proving Ground, you will install equipment such as pressure transducers, accelerometers, and thermocouples on large mining machinery equipment to capture test data. You will frequently work with computer software to setup each test and perform checkout of setup. An experienced technician will help you learn the setups, documentation, and test tracking. You will also work with team members outside instrumentation including engineers, operators, mechanics, crib attendants.

Fabrication Program

The TPG Fabricator Apprentice program is an amazing opportunity to grow your skills and work with world class fabricators at Caterpillar! We work with Caterpillar’s mining design engineers to fabricate parts for the testing of Caterpillar’s newest machines, prototypes, and ideas. As a part of the program, you will gain experience/exposure to heavy equipment related welding/repairs, waterjet cutting, plasma cutting, brake press operation, tube bending and machining. What we fabricate at TPG provides Caterpillar customers with a safer, more productive, and overall better experience.

Required Qualifications

• Must be comfortable working at heights, using forklifts, and operating cranes ( will be trained).
• 2+ years experience with MS Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
• Able to use a personal computer to access work management systems and documents and
• Current enrollment in eligible Pima Community College program. Eligible programs include automotive, applied technology, or fabrication.
• Must be able to work 32 hours per week. Normal hours range between 7am and 4:30pm but accommodations can be made with supervisor discussion.
• Must be able to work continuously on one’s feet for 8 to 10 hours per day in a variety of environmental conditions (i.e. inside/outside, hot/cold/inclement weather, dusty environment)

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

• Previous relevant experience
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Strong interest in working on and around large mining equipment (mining trucks, dozers, wheel loaders, etc)
• Project or Team Leadership experience
• Hands on experience or knowledge of mechanics/instrumentation/fabrication processes
