Position Summary:

Responsible for performing specialized patient care under the direction of the

Director, Surgical Services. Responsible for cleaning and maintenance of all anesthesia equipment as

well as ordering, stocking, distributing and maintaining inventory of anesthesia supplies.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists secretary in performing clerical duties at control desk.
  • Conducts routine checks of emergency carts and anesthesia carts; supplies anesthesia carts with scopes, endotracheal equipment and other supplies as indicated. Checks inventory against established listing pulling outdated drugs or equipment, replacing illegible labels, correcting other deficiencies ; notes action taken or needed on listings for Manager’s review and follow up.
  • Assists anesthesiologists and or nursing staff with direct patient care duties including but not limited to assisting with patient transfers, preparation of patient equipment, intubations, and regional anesthesia and placement of invasive monitors.
  • Reports to the Operating room any malfunctions of equipment; assumes responsibility for service maintenance and records of maintenance, including levels of gases and results of testing OR/PACU.
  • Changes soda-lime containers according to specific guidelines.
  • Checks for operational activity of battery run equipment in Anesthesia.
  • Sets up I.V. solutions, arterial lines and equipment for anesthesiologists use.
  • Maintains Anesthesia and Operating Room Library and keeps catalog file up to date.
  • Conducts weekly inventory to maintain quantity of supplies at established level and prepares orders for appropriate departments.
  • Sets up and calibrates invasive monitor transducers.
  • Participates in infection control through regular cleaning of anesthesia equipment and performs housekeeping duties to keep the anesthesia workroom neat and orderly. Cleans and maintains inhalation equipment, breathing circuits, connecting tubes and adapters.
  • Orders daily Anesthesia supplies from the storeroom and Pharmacy. Orders special equipment and replaces when needed.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operates Glucometer when necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by Director, Surgical Services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

EDUCATION: High School Graduate or equivalent education. Some college or specialized secretarial or business courses preferred. CPR certification required.

EXPERIENCE: 6 mo to 1 year of Operating Room/Anesthesia Tech or EMT experience preferred. Understanding of sterile technique is essential. OR and PACU exposure is necessary.

SKILLS/ABILITIES: Good interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work with detailed, confidential material, computer experience required. Must be a self starter, able to function with a minimum of supervision.

Working Conditions

Physical Environment: Occasional lifting of 30-35 lbs and turning patients. Prolonged standing and walking. Occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, sitting, kneeling, and squatting. Exposure to infectious disease and possible carcinogenic chemicals. Exposure of blood-bourne pathogens.

Manual Dexterity: Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulations for performing procedures and computer keyboard.

Audible/Visual Demands: Requires ability to see computer screen, reports, and perform assistance in procedures with accuracy. Requires ability to hear instructions from physician and nursing staff.

Scope of Position Responsibilities

For Supervision: Not applicable.

For Internal/External Relationships: Maintains sensitivity, maturity and flexibility in coping with difficult situations. Must be able to work with all levels of staff. Direct contact with hospital departments, physicians, patients and the community.
