The mission of the Department of Natural Resources is to manage, sustain, and protect the health and productivity of Washington's lands and waters to meet the needs of present and future generations. The objectives of the Aviation Maintenance Program is to provide for the safety of firefighters, pilots, aircrews and the public, to minimize the loss of forest resources from wildfire on lands protected by DNR, to minimize the cost of our fire suppression efforts, and to provide quality assurance on DNR's fire aviation maintenance resources. The Aircraft Mechanic reports to the DNA Wildfire Division Aviation Aircraft Mechanic Supervisor and is one of seven essential employee that conducts aircraft maintenance and ensures the safe operation of department aircraft. Responsible for repairs, rebuilds, maintains and inspects fixed wing and helicopter engines, airframes, aircraft parts, aviation ground support equipment and equipment for maintenance conditions to meet department operations, transportation, shop/field maintenance and Federal and State Aviation Regulations. Position operates with a high degree of independence.

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure proper accountability, serviceability, and use of assigned required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during activates that require use IAW department, OSHA, and safety guidelines;
  • Ensures accountability of all tools, parts, equipment, and all other items used in maintenance in the prevention of Foreign Object Damage (FOD) to aircraft before, during, and after maintenance actions have been taken;
  • Organize and clean shop areas as needed and directed by AMS;
  • Inform AMS immediately when on dispatch for any un-scheduled maintenance or parts needs;
  • When dispatched be prepared for extensions as needed to support department Air Operations;
  • Follow all travel rules per OFM guidance and Department Credit Card policies.
  • Vehicle maintenance, cleaning, and fueling.
  • Operates specialized aircraft maintenance equipment when qualified to include but not limited to forklifts, hoists, special aircraft tools, department vehicles, tugs, tow carts;
  • Light aircraft painting work;
  • Assists other mechanics, aircrew and pilots in aircraft maintenance activities both scheduled and un-scheduled;
  • Have dispatch vehicle prepared, packed, fueled, and ready for use once dispatch is received;
  • When on Standby Duty be prepared to be dispatched within 30 minutes of alert;
  • Inspects and determines needed repairs; repairs aircraft to OEM, state and federal maintenance standards;
  • Interpret and comply with instructions outlined in FAA airworthiness directives. Manufacturer’s letters bulletins, interagency policies, DNA Maintenance Operations Manual and state directives;
  • Perform field maintenance as directed by Aircraft Mechanic Supervisor (AMS);
  • Maintains individual work area, tools, and personal items in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Documents and Returns aircraft to service only after proper maintenance has been completed to standard, inspection by IA (when applicable, see MOM) is complete, and all maintenance logbook entries are complete;
  • Conducts Blade Tracking, Leak Checks, and Maintenance Test Flights and determines with the Maintenance Test Pilot return to service of aircraft from annual or primary inspections;
  • Works as a team member and respectfully interact with fellow employees, supervisors, and managers;
  • Research parts manual and ensures only correct and serviceable parts are used and prepare paperwork for records keeping and ordering;
  • Initiates and updates aircraft maintenance records, logbooks, and automated maintenance tracking software;

  • Ability to: inspect, diagnose trouble, adjust, maintain and repair aircraft; use hand and power tools; keep accurate records; determine maintenance needs from records and aircraft inspection.
  • Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment of aeromechanic trade, principles of operation of aircraft; use of aircraft testing and diagnostic equipment; safe practices.

  • 1 year experience operating as an FAA Qualified Airframe and Power Plant Mechanic or higher maintenance position within the last 4 years. FAA Airframe and Power plant license (Current).
  • Ability to consistently make sound decisions with little direct supervision.

Working Conditions:
  • A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.

  • Personally Owned tools to conduct aircraft maintenance
  • Considerable travel may be required during fire season.
  • About 80% of work is Aviation Hanger, and 20% is field oriented at locations throughout the State.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Incident Command System Qualifications.
  • 2 Years' Experience operating in a Public Aircraft Operation environment.
  • Aircraft Maintenance Systems Familiarity.
  • 2 Years' Experience in Aviation Shop environment or 14 CFR Part 145 operation.
  • 1 year PT6 maintenance experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in the Aviation Management, Business Management, or related field of study.
  • 2 years or more Kodiak 100 maintenance experience.
  • Safety Management Systems (SMS) Familiarity.
  • 2 years field experience maintaining Fixed wing In a Wildfire aviation operation environment.
