The Opportunity


The Admissions Counselor – Undergraduate Recruitment is a full-time, 12-month, administrative faculty exempt position based on-campus in the Office of Admissions at Colorado School of Mines. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Recruitment and is a member of the Undergraduate Recruitment Team. The Admissions Counselor – Undergraduate Recruitment will promote the goals and mission of Mines through the recruitment, admission, and enrollment of qualified and diverse undergraduate students. This position will provide direct service for the academic support of prospective, new and continuing students, encourage and support student participation in all the campus community has to offer, academically and socially, and emphasize student retention to graduation.


This position is primarily responsible for visiting high schools and community colleges, advising prospective students and their families on admission to Mines, evaluating applications for admission, encouraging enrollment and other general Admissions Office activities, and will thoroughly engage in undergraduate recruitment efforts through actively communicating the benefits of a Mines education to prospective students, their parents, counselors, and other community organizations.

Responsibilities


Recruitment, Admissions and Enrollment (75%)


The Admissions Counselor – Undergraduate Recruitment will represent Mines at scheduled college day/night programs/events and fairs throughout Colorado. On occasion, travel outside the state is necessary. In addition, this position is responsible for individual visits to selected high schools and community colleges throughout the academic year. The Admissions Counselor – Undergraduate Recruitment will serve as the primary Admissions Office contact for counselors and students interested in Mines at these schools.


  • Advise and review students’ academic progress and a make candid assessment of students’ potential for admission and scholarship consideration.
  • Responsible for independently making admission decisions and counseling students on the decisions of the Undergraduate Admissions Evaluation Team.
  • Counsel students and parents and serve as the key liaison to the high school guidance and external community organizations that serve the prospective student pipelines before and after admission, including through orientation and after enrollment.
  • Routinely meet with prospective students and their families as part of the Admissions Office on-campus, individual and campus tour program.
  • Work closely with Mines academic and administrative faculty and other personnel to facilitate the successful recruitment, admission, and enrollment of new students to Mines, with particular focus on prospective populations that are the strongest pipelines for the recruitment of diverse students.
  • Support other campus programs, such as high school counselor visits, counselor workshops, teacher enhancement programs, new student and parent orientation, as well as represent Mines through involvement with professional or community organizations that promote a similar mission to that of the Mines Office of Admissions. Evening and weekend work are expected for this position.
  • Provide support for the fall and spring on-campus visitation programs hosted by Admissions. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to student registration, program set-up, presentation moderation and assisting in the preparation of marketing materials for the programs.


Recruitment Programs/Event Planning (15%)


The Admissions Counselor-Undergraduate Recruitment will be tasked with a pivotal event planning responsibility.


  • Work with campus partners at Mines, outside vendors and managing program budgets in support of recruiting and event planning.
  • Responsible for behind-the scenes program development, planning and day-of execution for several admissions programs/events. Some of these events may be geared toward a specific student population/type, held on or off-campus, and with a goal of recruiting and yielding the incoming class.


Additional Duties (10%)


Although Admissions operates on a seasonal ‘cycle,’ a lot of our work is subject to some unpredictability. The Admissions Counselor-Undergraduate Recruitment needs to be able to be flexible and adapt to the needs of the office and university. All other duties as assigned are a part of the admissions/higher education workplace.


Pay Range


$55,000-$57,000


Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.

  • Travel needs of the position require successful applicants to be experienced working independently as well as within a team.
  • Strong public speaking, written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience:
  • Applicants must possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and be highly detail oriented.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students, including those from socially, racially, and ethnically diverse populations, within a student services office at a high school, pre-collegiate program, community college or college setting.
  • Education: Bachelors Degree
Preferred Qualifications
Education And Experience
  • Familiarity with integrated student information systems (i.e., Banner or similar system), constituent relationship management systems (i.e., Slate or a similar system), as well as word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
  • Prior experience in a community college, college or university admissions office.
