Job Description

The Accommodations Specialist of Disability Services is responsible for the coordination and implementation of accommodation services for students with disabilities in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Sawyer Business School, and the Law School; under the mandates of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (2008), MA State law and Suffolk University Policies. The Accommodations Specialist works in collaboration with the Director and Assistant Director to deliver services for students with disabilities by conducting intake appointments and providing ongoing case management. The Accommodations Specialist also assists in the monitoring and continuous improvement of accommodation services. The Accommodations Specialist reports to the Director in the Office of Disability Services, who reports directly to the Managing Director of the Division Student Success.

Student Case Management

  • Maintain a case-load of students registered with the Office of Disability Services and provide case management including, but not limited to, scheduled check-ins for the purposes of accommodations management, resource referral, assistance with executive functioning strategies, student outreach, and advisement on University policies and procedures.
  • Review and interpret relevant documentation, student self-reports, and student accommodation requests for students with disabilities, both current and perspective.
  • Communicate with faculty, staff, and other campus constituents when necessary regarding students and their requested accommodations.
  • Provide evaluation referrals when appropriate for students requesting accommodations.
  • Participate in interactive process with students to review accommodation requests, determine and grant reasonable accommodations and auxiliary services, monitor, adjust, and evaluate individual accommodation plans, inform students on the accommodation process, and assist students with advocacy.
  • Communicate with evaluators when necessary to gather additional information regarding students’ disabilities and accommodation needs.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Assist with office filing, database updates and other duties, as assigned.
  • Assist in administration of examinations with accommodations to students with disabilities. At times, may be responsible for sitting in as a proctor and/or reader and scribe.
  • Follow assessment protocols to evaluate student development and office operations in an ongoing effort to improve quality and delivery of programs/services and track student interactions.
  • Represent the Office of Disability Services at Open Houses, Showcases, Commencement and other university-wide events.
  • Maintain a confidential database and files of students with disabilities on campus.

Community Education and Collaboration

  • Provide information to students, faculty, staff, teachers/high school guidance counselors, and students’ families regarding transition to Suffolk University, registration processes, and disability services at Suffolk University.
  • Initiate and develop ongoing campus educational opportunities, collaborations, and awareness programming on disability, accommodations, and accessibility-related topics.
  • Collaborate effectively with the campus partners from the Division of Student Success, Student Affairs, and staff/faculty in navigating the University through disability-related matters.
  • Participate in departmental, divisional, and institutional events and activities.
  • Serve as a member of a divisional committee.

Professional Development

  • Remain current on information pertaining to disability services through professional development opportunities.
