Job Description

Pay Grade/Pay Range: Non Classified - Grade NA

Department/Organization: 209312 - ACCESS

Normal Work Schedule: Varies based on assignment

Note to Applicants: This job posting is for the 2022-2023 Academic Year. Applicants should upload a cover letter, current resume (including a list of courses taught in the past 5 years), Alabama Teaching Certificate and a letter of recommendation from your current principal. The teaching certificate and letter of recommendation will need to be added to the additional documents tab, you may combine documents if needed in this tab.

Job Summary: The ACCESS Teacher provides web-based instruction to State of Alabama high school students.

Additional Department Summary: In order to be an ACCESS teacher, you must be certified to teach (grades 7 – 12) in the State of Alabama. Since we offer the entire high school curriculum, we are currently looking for new, enthusiastic teachers who are interested in teaching in an exciting, fully digital environment.
Teachers are expected to initiate and maintain regular contact with facilitators and students regarding student progress. Web-based instruction (WBI) teachers are expected to log in to the learning management system at least once each school day throughout any term in which they are assigned a course. At a minimum, teachers are expected to respond to student emails, provide feedback on activities, grade assignments, monitor student participation, and create or post timely announcements.
Teachers must monitor login times for students and discuss any areas of concern or irregularities with the facilitator, school administrator, or designee. News items and events must also be posted to keep students on pace and facilitators well informed of course activities and assignments. WBI teachers will preview all activities, links, and quizzes in the learning management system before assigning them to students.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and experience and expertise in related field of study. Must be certified to teach in the State of Alabama.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Teachers who interact with students via virtual learning to deliver instruction must pass the fingerprint/background check required by the Alabama State Department of Education for work with the ACCESS Distance Learning Initiative. Must have classroom experience in the content area being taught, be certified in Alabama, or be faculty members of an institution of higher education that is accredited by an agency identified in the Alabama Administrative Code. These include the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, New England Association of Schools and Colleges, North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and other organizations approved by the Alabama State Board of Education. These teachers must possess expertise in the specific content area and must have participated in professional development, sponsored by the providing institution, pertaining to instructional methodology and technical aspects of online course delivery. Although ACCESS teachers will ordinarily have three years of experience in Alabama, extraordinary accomplishments of an interested teacher, in some circumstances, could allow the experience requirement to be waived.
ACCESS teachers are expected to be proficient in the use of the learning management system and other resources as identified and needed for successful course delivery. Teachers who teach an Advanced Placement (AP) course for ACCESS must have participated in AP training for that course and have a minimum of one-year of experience teaching the course. Teachers teaching a video conferencing (VCI) AP course must have received prior authorization for their AP course syllabus from the College Board.

Skills and Knowledge: Must be skilled in Microsoft Programs (Word, Excel, Power Point) and Internet with willingness to learn other systems and applications and comfortable with self-learning. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively with students, facilitators, counselors and school administration. Ability to teach within a Learning Management System (LMS) to deliver high quality instruction

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of K-12 public schools

Background Investigation Statement: Prior to hiring, the final candidate(s) must successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation and information obtained from social media and other internet sources. A prior conviction reported as a result of the background investigation DOES NOT automatically disqualify a candidate from consideration for this position. A candidate with a prior conviction or negative behavioral red flags will receive an individualized review of the prior conviction or negative behavioral red flags before a hiring decision is made.

Equal Employment Opportunity: The University of Alabama is an Equal Employment/Equal Educational Opportunity Institution. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment or volunteer status without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, age, genetic or family medical history information, disability, protected veteran status, or any other legally protected basis, and will not be discriminated against because of their protected status. Applicants and employees of this institution are protected under Federal law from discrimination on several bases.
