Position Overview:

The Accelerator Operations and Safety Division of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking an experienced engineer or physicist to coordinate the overall accelerator maintenance activity in the Linear Accelerator Facility, which includes LCLS-I, FACET-II and LCLS-II. This person will also take on the role of the Area Manager for the current and former control rooms.

Specific Responsibilities Include (but not limited to):

  • Manage maintenance and upgrades of equipment in the Accelerator Control Room (ACR), Main Control Center (MCC), and Central Control Room (CCR). Ensure that the ACR console equipment, computers, test equipment, safety-related equipment and tools are kept up to date and ready for use by the on-shift staff when needed.
  • Monitor and analyze machine performance from the perspective of maintenance and reliability issues.
  • Coordinate and run daily meetings where maintenance issues are resolved, recurring problems are identified, and maintenance scheduling conflicts are resolved. Invite and encourage participation by representatives of all groups that support the operation and maintenance of the Linear Accelerator Facility.
  • Assist with the development of SLAC’s Comprehensive Accelerator Tool for Enhancing Reliability (CATER) and other maintenance management tools.
  • Actively assist in resource-intensive control room activities, such as maintenance day work.
  • Update accelerator performance databases, compile statistics on system reliability, and prepare down time schedules and periodic reports.
  • Work closely with the operations staff, the area managers, the system physicists and representatives from other divisions to coordinate preventative and remedial maintenance, including detailed planning of machine shut-down and startup-up activities. Review proposed activities for adherence to high standards of safety.
  • Participate in machine development activities and projects to improve the technical performance, safety, and efficiency of accelerator operations.
  • Recommend, specify, and sometimes implement changes to the control system, to technical and administrative documents, including operating procedures, checklists, and training material, and to the tools and spare parts used by the Accelerator Operations staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities for improving operational effectiveness.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate potential problems and to find practical ways to mitigate or work around obstacles. Demonstrated ability to diagnose component failures in a large accelerator complex and to initiate repairs or other mitigations as appropriate.
  • Demonstrated experience in decision making, directing the work of others, and speaking clearly before groups of 40 or more people.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate a group in overcoming complex operational challenges and in working productively with a broad range of physicists, engineers, technicians, and users.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently initiate projects and work in a team environment under limited supervision.
  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering, or related fields, plus at least four years of experience in the operation or maintenance of accelerators.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills. Ability to read, understand, interpret, and write technical specifications and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of database software.
  • Experience with SLAC’s CATER software.
  • Experience solving technical problems using diagnostic tools, scientific data analysis applications and computer control system software of the SLAC accelerators.
  • Experience with SLAC accelerator control systems.

The expected pay range for this position is $140,000 to $198,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
