Position Summary

The largest undergraduate program at Washington University, the College of Arts & Sciences contains approximately 4,400 degree seeking undergraduate students and more than 600 non-A&S second majors and minors; additionally, it engages with pre-college, post-baccalaureate, and visiting students. Student Academic Affairs, housed within the College Office, comprises five central functional areas: four-year advising and the first-year experience; student progress and academic success; academic policies and administration; post-graduate and pre-professional planning; and pre-health advising and programs. The academic advisor will contribute to advising and programmatic initiatives in the functional area of student progress and academic success, assist in the execution of programs and events that enhance the academic mission of the College of Arts & Sciences, and guide students on their academic path from their first year through graduation.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Serve as a four-year academic advisor for approximately 45 undergraduate students in each class (180 advisees).

  • Work with campus partners to ensure holistic support and tracking of student progress.
  • Coordinate mentoring or specific programming for students within various academic programs.
  • Support students in developing a required academic plan to meet graduation requirements.
  • Interpret and explain university policies, procedures, and curriculum to students, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Analyze students’ academic and personal issues or concerns and provide referral or intervention services.
  • Liaise with Arts & Sciences departments and programs to ensure a holistic student academic experience.
  • Maintain appropriate student records and documents student interactions.
  • Provide academic advising to support student retention and graduation initiatives.
  • Guide students through college and university level administrative processes.
  • Identify and help resolve obstacles impeding the academic success of students.

Serve as an academic advisor across areas of the College Office.

  • Advise undergraduate students in areas of the College Office, for example as a progress counselor, pre-professional (pre-health, pre-grad, pre-law) advisor, fellowship advisor, skills coach, or post-baccalaureate premedical advisor.

Assist in the coordination and execution of assigned program(s).

  • Execute daily tasks and track progress of programs.
  • Assist students with navigating university policies, procedures, and resources.
  • Monitor student progress towards graduation; extract, analyze, and report on student progress utilizing SIS, Early Alerts, and Web Advising.
  • Collaborate in the design of program goals, including development and implementation.
  • Provide support for advisees, Progress Counselees, and academically at-risk students by assisting with goal setting, academic success skills, and utilization of appropriate academic resources.
  • Assist the Senior Assistant Dean of the student progress and academic success functional area with retention and persistence initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience advising students in an educational or academic setting.
  • Knowledge of liberal arts curricula and of concepts, practices, and procedures related to undergraduate education.
  • Ability to project genuineness and warmth as a service-oriented communicator.
  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal. Audiences should include students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders.
  • High degree of self-motivation, organization, accuracy, and productivity with an ability to manage time, meet deadlines, and follow-through on projects in a timely manner with varying degrees of pressure.
  • Master’s degree.
  • A strong commitment to cultivating relationships with students in the context of a learning environment and to delivering excellent student academic affairs.
  • Sound judgement and high level of maturity, including ability to handle confidential information responsibly in sensitive situations involving students.
  • Ability to anticipate student needs and act to address them.
  • Ability to thrive in a position that requires independent judgement and to step in as a reliable team member on various collaborative projects as needed.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and three years of related work experience or a Master's degree and one year of related experience.

Salary Range

$48,700.00 - $80,500.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
