One (1) year of previous referee/umpiring, playing or coaching experience is preferred.

Ability to handle participants, team managers and/or coaches under difficult game situations.

Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

Understands how the game is played including the principles, practice, and techniques used in recreational sporting events.

High degree of interpersonal communication, conflict management skills to tactfully enforce all rules and regulations.

Ergonomic Requirements: Bending, stooping, standing, lifting up to 25 pounds, seeing, verbal communication and hearing.

Must have an eye for detail, quick decision making and ability to recognize and remedy hazardous/dangerous situations.

Must be available nights and weekends.

Knowledge of USA softball and rules

Past playing experience. Past umpiring experience

Pay: $25-30 per game, depending upon experience

High School diploma or equivalent

Ability to work with minimal supervision

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with players, scorekeepers, umpires, coordinators, and Parks staff

Provide knowledgeable interpretation of softball rules pertaining to different age groups and league standards.

Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of softball rules.

Skills: Conflict resolution and communication skills to be able to defuse possible hostile situations.

Enforce recreation department rules and policies.

Ensure safety and security of participants and spectators.

Answer inquiries and provide information to the public.

Monitors times related to the event; ensures time requirements are followed precisely and starts and stops gameplay as needed.

Studies and understands game rules that apply to a men’s softball game.

Judges gameplay during sporting events to award points and decide results.

Observes gameplay closely, makes calls based on the application of game rules, and assesses any required penalties according to established regulations.

Ensures teams follow all safety regulations.

When available, consults with other umpires and/or playback screens to make a final call on a contested play.
