Obtains a thorough medical history from the patient

Assesses patient's visual acuity, both near and far vision.

Performs manual lensometry on patient's glasses.

Assesses patient's refractive error by performing a manifest refraction.

Performs documentation, patient education and enters charges. Assists with the flow of patient care.

High School Diploma or GED is required

Under the direct supervision of eye care provider, assists with performing patient care.

Performs basic optometric testing procedures, diagnostic testing, administration of medications and tasks delegated by the eye care provider.

Work requires an education background generally equivalent to a high school education.

Examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note variations from normal.

May administer dilation or anesthetic drops or assist with patient contact lens insertion and removal training.

Alleviate patient and family concerns by explaining diagnostic procedures and method of treatment.

Complete stocking and maintenance functions and maintain the physical environment of exam and procedure rooms.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Maintains and cleans equipment, reports equipment deficiencies to management.

Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification (applicants who have obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree are exempt from the COA requirement).

Two years related experience (equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).

Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification.

Zero (0) to two (2) years’ experience in a relevant role.

$10,000 Tuition Reimbursement per year ($5,700 part-time)

Special Skills or Training Requirements

Must begin home study course in first year to work towards JCAHPO COA level certification

JCAHPO COA level certification preferred during 2nd year

Obtain CPR Certification within 90 days of hire (training provided by Trinity for certification)

Previous experience using computerized system for data reporting, information storage and retrieval required

Ophthalmic Disorders (Fundamental Awareness): Has limited experience, training or direct exposure working with ophthalmic disorders.

Ophthalmic Testing (Fundamental Awareness): Has limited experience, training, or direct exposure working with ophthalmic testing.

Provides basic ophthalmic workup and testing with supervision.

Assists faculty, residents and technical staff with daily clinical needs as directed.

Explain treatment procedures and provide approved educational information to patients and their families

Manage Provider schedule(s) in the EHR system, which includes scheduling patients for appointments, and in-office procedures

Obtain and document past medical and surgical histories, chief complaint, history of present illness (HPI), and vital signs

Reconcile and document patient medications and allergies in the EHR system

Assist the Provider with patient examination, treatment, and in-office procedures as needed

Prepare and administer medications as directed by the Provider

Good computer skills; able to navigate between screens

First Shift ( Monday through Friday from 08:00am to 05:00pm )

Generates preliminary information for ophthalmologist.

Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.

Support testing required by type of exam scheduled, patient complaint and history.

Acts as scribe while physician examines patient entering data into electronic medical records or handwrites in paper chart, oversees patient flow.

Documents all information in the System following the Clear Concise Consistent method.

Ophthalmic Assistant (OA/COA) – Ophthalmology

Experience that includes medical history taking, ophthalmic patient services, general medical knowledge, and visual acuity testing is preferred.

Assists with providing fundamental patient education. Reports any issues or problems not clearly defined to supervisor or physician.

Train for new tasks and ancillary skills as assigned.

Must have knowledge of medical terminology.

Effective interpersonal skills necessary to relate to patients in a sympathetic and tactful manner and allay patient apprehensions.

Requires knowledge of the Department's policies, procedures and protocols normally acquired through on the job training.

Scribes pertinent medical findings, assessment and plan, as dictated by eye care provider.

Assists in scheduling of appointments, tests, treatments and/or surgeries. Is familiar with insurance benefits

Performs a variety of ocular testing and visual assessment skills

High School Diploma or GED, required. Evidence of continuing education in specialty field.

Clinical experience in a physician’s practice, preferred.

Escorts patients from reception area to exam room and prepares them for exam and/or treatment

Accurately and efficiently takes patient histories (ocular, medical and family) and vital signs (as applicable)

Requires working knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms and ocular medications.

Knowledge of A-Scans, fundus photos, nerve fiber analysis and fluorescein angiography.

Requires good understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care

Ability to communicate effectively with staff, physicians, patients, and the public.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to collect data and maintain accurate records.
