GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

An appointment of the Mayor, supervised by the Parks Superintendent, the Zoo Director performs highly responsible duties requiring the use of considerable independent judgment, in the supervision and administration of all work and activities in the operation of the Capron Park Zoo.

The Director can see the big picture as well as focus on each detail required to get there. Responsible for overall prioritization of staff work and ongoing campaigns to achieve organizational goals. Implements the strategic plan of the organization and provides oversight of all zoo operations. Supervises the Assistant Director to ensure appropriate staffing, proper care of the animals, and maintenance of zoo property. Coordinates and oversees zoo marketing campaigns and educational programs. Builds and maintains good relationships and communication with other city personnel, state and federal representatives, the Friends of Capron Park Zoo, community partners, stakeholders, and existing/prospective donors. Plans, develops, implements, and oversees existing and new revenue sources for the organization. Works with Parks Superintendent to prepare and manage annual budget, and identify and plan for special/ capital improvement projects. Works with the Friends of Capron Park Zoo to establish annual fundraising targets, plan capital campaigns, and to plan a variety of fundraising events. Positively promotes Capron Park Zoo within the community to ensure a broad base of funding resources and public support. This position is funded by opiod settlement funds at least through the exhaustion of the funds.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Administration

  • Update personnel policies on a yearly basis.
  • Develop community partnerships and revenue opportunities through special event planning, educational programs, hosting meetings and other events for area employers, etc.
  • Create and distribute monthly event calendar across media platforms.
  • Personnel administration for zoo operations including payroll, maintaining employee records, recommendations for salary & benefit increases and employee yearly evaluations.
  • Write monthly Director Report to be submitted to the Parks Superintendent and the Mayor’s Office.
  • Provide oversight of and direction for all zoo operations, including direct supervision of staff including the Assistant Director, facilities and office support staff, and volunteers.
  • Actively market and promote zoo with community partners including but not limited to: Chambers of Commerce, service organizations, etc.
  • Works with Assistant Director and zoo staff to ensure proper animal care, timely property improvements, oversee and develop revenue opportunities, and ensure AZA accreditation and USDA licensure.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of the zoo, to include animal acquisition, transfer, welfare, euthanasia, reintroduction, and zoo programs.
  • Responsible for all zoo owned or leased equipment, equipment maintenance and office supplies.
  • Prepare financial reports to the Parks Superintendent weekly, monthly, or as directed, with a detailed financial analysis showing current and projected budget expenditures and revenues, capital improvement projects, educational programing, and special event revenue.
  • Crate and maintain internal policies, and other official documents, pertaining to the zoo.
  • Coordinate with other city departments for events, projects, and revenue opportunities.

Project Management

  • Work with Mayor, Budget and Administration Director, Assistant Director, and the Park and Forestry Superintendent for discussion and decisions related to zoo exhibits and implementation of new projects related to the zoo's strategic plan.
  • Oversee the implementation of all communications including campaign materials, social media marketing, special promotions, and materials related to end-of-year appeal and capital campaign projects.
  • Provide general project management related to all zoo functions.

Revenue Development:

  • Performs related work as required.
  • Work with the Friends of Capron Park Zoo to establish memorial and recognition programs, and planned giving opportunities.
  • Develop and oversee zoo marketing and advertising campaign.
  • Explore and facilitate grant opportunities.
  • Work with the Friends of Capron Park Zoo to establish annual fundraising targets, build relationships with potential donors, and develop fundraising appeals.
  • In conjunction with the city’s Director of Economic Development and Community Engagement Manager, identify and cultivate major relationships with area businesses and other organizations for special event opportunities.

BACKGROUND REQUIRED (typically defined as a combination of education and related work experiences)

Minimum Acceptable:

A Bachelor’s degree in administration, business or another related field. Prior zoological management experience a plus, but not a requirement.

Preferred:

A Master’s degree in administration, business or another related field. Prior zoological management experience a plus, but not a requirement.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Requires good manual dexterity and fine motor coordination, good vision, physical mobility, and flexibility. Continuous sitting, some standing and walking necessary. Work is performed in an office environment via stair access. This position requires frequent computer use and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

· Experience with fundraising and creating new revenue generating opportunities.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, coupled with strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.

· Ability to identify and cultivate new partnerships and collaborations with local businesses, schools, and other organizations.

· Experience with capital improvement planning and developing and overseeing annual budgets.

· Strong leadership, public speaking, and time management/organizational skills.

· Detail-oriented with excellent organization and ability to manage concurrent projects.

· Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.

· Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (Such as licenses, certifications, registrations necessary to perform the job)

  • Valid state driver’s license.
