The Center for PreCollege Programs administers pre-college and career readiness pipeline programs designed to educate, inspire, and prepare students to be future-focused and 21st century ready. Our commitment is to support students by providing opportunities to achieve and grow effectively. CPP serves more than 2,000 students and parents annually by facilitating various programs throughout Newark, East Orange, Orange, Irvington, and the greater Essex County area. The Center for PreCollege Programs houses our three TRIO programs of Talent Search (2) and Upward Bound, the Dual Enrollment Institute, the PreCollege Academy, the College Clubhouse, University-Assisted Partnerships, the Tutoring Spot, and the Rutgers Future Scholars Program, in addition to other STEM and special interest programs and collaborations.
Posting Summary
Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise is seeking Youth Development Specialists. The Upward Bound program seeks dynamic culturally responsive, human-centered Youth Development Specialists ( YDS ) to guide early college and career readiness preparation and adaptive school-based and Saturday programming for 9th-12th grade students.
The Center for PreCollege Programs administers precollege and pipeline programs designed to educate, inspire and prepare students to be successful in secondary and post-secondary education while promoting a college-going culture.
The Upward Bound program is a federally grant-funded program that identifies and assists high school students who have the potential to succeed in higher education.
This position is contingent upon the continuation of grant funding.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Requires up to two years relevant experience in an administrative function, good communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy.
Certifications/Licenses
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience conducting small group and/or one-on-one sessions with middle and high school students to provide mentoring and support;
  • Background in youth development, social work, psychology, urban education and/or sociology preferred.
  • Applicants should have knowledge of social and emotional competencies;
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Applicants should also have experience conducting small group and/or one-on-one sessions with adolescents;
  • Experience working with students from urban areas, first-generation students, out-of-school time programming, facilitating college readiness seminars and/or social and emotional learning workshops for middle and high school students;
  • Must complete the Protection of Minors Training and background check;
  • Must participate in staff training.

  • Must have reliable means of transportation to school sites.
  • Must have access to an appropriate workspace with laptop and internet to facilitate virtual workshops and small group sessions;
  • Role requires occasional lifting and transportation of classroom supplies;
