Summary

The Yard Technician will operate heavy equipment such as track machines, wheeled machines, all coal conveying equipment, and other equipment associated with coal handling. Performs adjustments, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance work on yard equipment and structures.

Primary Functions

  • Operate yard equipment such as track machines, wheeled machines; stocks, spreads, compacts and reclaims coal
  • Maintain workplace, tools and equipment in a neat and orderly condition
  • Direct and train less experienced employees
  • Perform the duties of a Deckhand
  • At shift change, check with employee whom they relieve for special orders, abnormal conditions, and to obtain all pertinent information on operating conditions; examine log sheets to check operation, condition of equipment and to obtain information and instructions
  • Maintain and change filters on coal handling heaters, ventilating, air moving and air conditioning equipment
  • Operate coal conveying equipment and associated apparatus including the barge unloader, belt conveyors, crushers, shuttles, samplers, slide/flop gates, and vibrators. Remove foreign material from belts or other parts of conveyor system.
  • Perform duties of a Tow Boat Pilot, only if currently licensed by the Coast Guard
  • Operate coal conveying equipment from control panel to maintain proper supply and blend of fuel
  • Perform duties for the Clearance Program, such as directing, placing and removing locks/tags
  • Process samples in accordance with business practices
  • Operate the Barge Unloader, keep accurate barge log and communicate Master Control Panel and other operators using phonetic alphabet and three-part communication
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment
  • Inspect, lubricate, clean and service yard equipment and report abnormal conditions to supervisor. Check operation of coal handling equipment; makes adjustments and repairs to equipment.

When assigned to Lime/Gypsum Handling, duties include:

  • Collect samples, operate test instruments, perform routine analysis and tests associated with plant processes, record results and report irregularities
  • Check the operating condition of safety showers and eye wash stations
  • Direct and train less experienced employees
  • Maintain assigned area and equipment in a neat and orderly condition
  • Perform duties for the Clearance Program, such as directing, placing, and removing locks/tags
  • Operate Lime Unloading Crane and associated feeders, belts, slide gates, vibrators and dust collection systems to the Bulk Storage Silos
  • Perform maintenance when operating equipment, assisting in and performing maintenance, repair, cleaning and overhaul work on plant and plant equipment when not performing operating duties
  • Lubricate auxiliary equipment, change oil in other assigned auxiliary equipment, observe oil reservoirs for contaminants and take oil inventories
  • Perform duties of a Lime Barge Handler to remove covers on barges

Working Relationships

The Yard Technician reports to the Yard Supervisor.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Position requires working outdoors in a wide range of temperatures as well as work in high places, confined spaces, over and near water
  • Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.
  • Must have the ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)

Work Schedule

This position works 12 hour rotating shifts with 2 days on then 2 days off with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the plant.

Compensation

The initial hourly rate of pay is $36.52.

Job Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate motor vehicles safely
  • Must satisfactorily complete training courses for progression requirements
  • Must have a working knowledge of the safe use of tools used for routine repairs
  • Must pass the Edison Electric Institute’s POSS/MASS test
  • Thorough knowledge of the operation and repair practices and procedures for Yard equipment
  • Knowledge of the principles of operation and application of applicable fire-fighting equipment and the safety, first aid and other resuscitation practices prescribed by the Company and/or Coast Guard
  • Strong mechanical skills, abilities, aptitude and work experience for power station work
  • Self-motivated to work alone and without direct supervision
  • Must possess a minimum of a two-year technical degree in a related field from an accredited school or the equivalent in education, training, and experience
  • Ability to work well with others and perform group work tasks
  • Willingness, and ability to learn and perform the operation, care and functions of various equipment such as bulldozers, backhoes, conveyors and other Yard equipment
  • Must demonstrate a questioning attitude to learn, produce results, and develop relationships
  • Satisfactory performance in the operation of Yard equipment under normal, abnormal and emergency conditions
  • Working knowledge of the Yard layout, the functions and operation of the equipment located therein and the functional relationship with system operations
