: Sell boats. We specialize in sailboats.

Skills needed: I could go on about people skills, self motivation etc. etc. But it boils down to four traits. 1. A work ethic that won’t quit. 2. Being available pretty much all the time to return calls and emails almost immediately. 3. Knowledge about sailboats and sailboat systems. 4. Overcoming obstacle after obstacle to keep the deal on track, without getting frustrated.

What is the job, Or how do you sell a boat? It is very much like real estate. Find someone that wants to sell a boat, or someone who wants to buy one. Write up a listing on a boat MLS. Take calls and emails and schedule a showing on a boat. Look at a succession of boats educating the client as you go. Find the right one, and write up the agreement. Negotiate the price with the seller or seller’s broker, and close the deal. Attend the boat inspection (called a vessel survey) and then renegotiate the deal with the issues found in the inspection. Do the closing, get the money, and get paid.

Like Real Estate, this is a straight commission sales position. The seller of the boat pays 10% commission. Half goes to the house (the business) and half goes to the brokers. Our top performer averages $70K with 7 years experience. First year earnings is closer to $30K. As you build your customer base, your clients start upgrading and gets a bigger one. So it keeps building. It takes about three years to be cooking along with a good income. For an outstanding candidate I am willing to pay a draw against commissions to get you going.

What are we looking for? Someone to knock our socks off with work ethic, integrity, focus, and knowing there is a solution to any obstacle, just need to figure it out. Intelligence is a piece, education is another, and knowing how to sail is a big plus. The biggest element is impressing the hell out of me, in an understated way.

There is a lot of flexibility with your time, and you are not glued to a desk, but again, must be available to interact with clients all the time. A lot of weekend work, as that is when folks can look at boats.
