Senior Wind Turbine Technician/Wind Technician
Location: Biglow Wind Farm, Rufus, OR
As a wind technician at PGE, you’ll be contributing to the development and expansion of clean and sustainable energy sources. We are posting this position at two levels-here are the details:
As a wind technician you’ll operate, maintain, and oversee replacement, installation and removal of wind power generation facilities equipment and structures; you’ll identify, analyze and implement predictive maintenance; maintain plant computer and control systems; collect and analyze operating data.

Wind Turbine Technician 6622 Grade 4

Key Responsibilities:
Wind Turbine Operation and Maintenance:
Performs routine preventive maintenance in accordance with OEM maintenance manuals and technical bulletins. Performs routine corrective maintenance of mechanical, electrical and electronic component repair or replacement of parts while following OEM requirements with periodic review by senior technicians. Prepares procedural documentation associated with turbine operations and maintenance for review by senior technicians. Participates in QA/QC inspections while turbines are under Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) warranty and maintenance contract. Stays current on industry changes to improve the reliability, performance, and efficiency of the wind farm.
Senior level technicians complete the work with greater independence, contribute to the development and documentation of new or improved procedures, and review the work of less experienced technicians.
Balance of Plant Operations and Maintenance:
Operates and performs preventative maintenance on low-, medium- and high- voltage equipment with periodic review by senior technicians. Follows approved switching order, performs high voltage switching and installs safety grounds. Maintains function and operation of support facilities including office spaces, warehouses, control and communication areas, heating and cooling systems, electrical power, plumbing, etc. with periodic review by senior technicians.
Senior level technicians complete the work with greater independence, inspect and maintain turbine access roads and review the repair and maintenance work of less experienced technicians, contractors
Safety:
Follows PGE and Plant safety and environmental policies, instructions, and guidelines; suggesting improvements to existing safety and environmental procedures to protect people, equipment, and the environment.
Teamwork:
Functions within a team to safely, cost effectively and quickly resolve issues. May assist less experienced colleagues in resolving problems and issues not covered by procedural instructions and manuals. Stays current on industry changes to improve the reliability, performance and efficiency of the wind farm. Shares knowledge with less experienced colleagues.

Education/Experience/Certifications
Education: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; training from an accredited school, other than correspondence or on-line, in a technical hard science (engineering, physics, power, or closely related) preferred.
Experience:
  • Electrical training with journeyman or apprentice level skills or equivalent experience preferred.
  • At the senior level, experience in power plant and substation operations and electrical maintenance and/or four or more years of experience with related platform (e.g., Vestas, GE or Siemens dependent on plant). Experience in wind turbine maintenance, commissioning and troubleshooting preferred.
  • A current journeyman or master electrician license may substitute for two years of experience.
  • A wind technician certificate program can substitute for one year of experience.
  • Typically, two or more years in operations and/or maintenance of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems. Senior level: 5 years

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Skills in analytical thinking, decision-making, interpersonal communication.
  • Skills in data entry and use of MS Office applications to communicate and perform tasks.
  • Knowledge of utility industry
  • Knowledge of turbine equipment, including safety regulations.
  • Ability to interpret and follow directions, procedures, and instructions.
  • Advanced knowledge and skill with electronic testing equipment. (i.e., voltage tester, amp clamp, oscilloscope, infrared camera, hydraulic torque and tension, alignment and other various hand and power tools).
  • Ability to think clearly and maintain composure during stressful or dangerous situations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and correct failed or faulty equipment.
  • Ability to interpret schematics and drawings for electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Knowledge of industry compliance and standards such as OSHA, NERC, FERC, NEC, NESC, NFPA 70, etc.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair automated control systems, instrumentation, and SCADA systems.
  • Technical writing skills utilized for developing procedures and training documentation.
  • Ability to interpret and follow a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Physical Capabilities
  • This position requires a valid driver’s license and a history of safe driving practices.
  • Weight must not exceed 265lbs (excluding equipment/gear) when performing job related tasks, dictated by ladder and fall protection equipment ratings. Determined by equipment and PPE weight limitations.
  • Able to pass wind physical evaluation and to climb 80 meters (300 ft) steel towers daily basis to perform maintenance in the nacelle and hub.
  • Moving on unstable surfaces requiring balance, including:
    • Elevated areas (i.e., catwalks, roofs and high buildings)
    • Confined spaces
    • Walking distances and surfaces (long distances and over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces)
    • Stairs (over 10 steps)
    • Ladders (over 10 rungs)
    • Must be able to climb wind turbines which can be 250 feet or more.
  • Daily driving/travel/commute within service territory - Frequently
  • Occasional overnight driving/travel/commuting inside/outside the service territory
  • Elevated areas (i.e., catwalks, roofs and high buildings)
  • Stairs (over 10 steps)
  • Must be able to climb wind turbines which can be 250 feet or more.
  • Confined spaces
  • Lifting/pushing/pulling/carrying: More than 50 lbs.
  • Walking distances and surfaces (long distances and over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces)
  • Computer use (use computer regularly for entire work shift)
  • Ladders (over 10 rungs)
