Summary of Duties:
As a counselor in the Counseling and Wellness Office the primary responsibility of this position will be to provide wellness, mental health and academic counseling to veterinary students, veterinary interns and residents, and graduate students. This position will prioritize working with our veterinary students, interns, and residents, over 75% of whom identify as female. As such, this individual must have the ability to build trust and rapport with this population with a high level of cultural competence regarding the barriers faced by women in STEM fields. To a lesser degree, this position will also consult with faculty and staff or groups, proactively provide informational and educational programming, serve as a liaison with agencies and programs outside of the college, maintain website and other outreach efforts, and participate in the development and delivery of wellbeing activities. This includes participating as a team member in the planning, mentor training, and implementation of the Cougar Orientation and Leadership Experience (COLE), contributing to course offerings to veterinary students, and developing and delivering well-being activities.
This position is either 9 or 12 months, with flexibility to contract between 32 - 40 hours worked weekly (i.e., .75 - 1.0 FTE).
Required Qualifications:
Positions require a master's degree in Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, or related field and the ability to become independently licensed as a mental health professional in the State of Washington within one (1) year of employment.
  • Desire to work as part of a team-centered department focused on all aspects of student wellbeing and mental health care.
  • The College of Veterinary Medicine seeks qualified candidates who are committed to working collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies.
  • A Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work, and at least two years of counseling experience with university and/or adult populations.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Independently licensed, or the ability to have or meet qualifications for licensure in the State of Washington within 6 months of hire.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Human Animal Bond.
  • Work as a secondary school counselor or in a university counseling center.
  • Experience with high achieving populations.
  • Experience creating and presenting wellbeing workshops and presentations.
  • Experience in grief and bereavement training and counseling.
  • A PhD. or comparable terminal degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work.
  • Experience in the career, academic, and interpersonal development of young adults in academia, and in facilitating the development of adaptive coping skills and mindsets in adjusting to major life transitions.

Monthly Salary:
$4,942.10 - $6,912.69 (at 1.0 FTE) | Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
