Job Description
Our Welding Center of Excellence (CoE) serves as a service organization within Sensata, catering to both internal and external customers. As part of the Welding CoE, you will be instrumental in new product development, continuous improvement initiatives, and addressing quality issues. You will also work to remain current with welding trends and research, and contribute to the creation of best practices, standards, and guidelines for welding processes at our company. Communication skills are key, as effectively collaborating with teams spread across the world is a crucial part of the role.

We are seeking a skilled Welding Engineer with expertise in welding processes. Most of the welds we do at Sensata are small-scale and can be held comfortably in your hand, so preference is given to candidates with experience with small-scale welding. The most common welding technologies employed in our manufacturing processes are laser beam welding and resistance welding for metals, however other processes are employed, including but not limited to gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, friction stir welding, ultrasonic welding (plastic and metal), and plastic LBW.
General Responsibilities
  • Lead cross functional teams
  • Transferring knowledge to make site personnel
  • Support improvement projects to reduce cycle time, defects, and manufacturing costs
  • Specifies functional requirements, reviewing designs, and debugging/qualifying new high volume assembly/test equipment or tooling
  • Defines manufacturing strategy for zero defect as well as defines the specifications for production equipment and interacts with mechanization (in house) and/or equipment suppliers to ensure equipment will meet specifications
  • Proactively identifies risk mitigation opportunities and process involvements
  • Leads the successful launch of new products
  • Advises on the development of synergies across multiple product lines
  • Develop new or improved manufacturing and testing processes that are necessary to achieve the performance and cost requirements of future device applications
  • Leads advanced quality planning activities
  • Check in with other departments on the status of process specifications, quality aspects, product specifications, and continuity of equipment
  • Evaluate Sensata’s and suppliers technical capabilities including tooling design, build experience, maintenance program, processes and process control, cell automation- if requires, quality control systems, and materials knowledge
  • Work with suppliers and contract manufacturers to ensure processes are capable, have sufficient controls in place, can meet our delivery requirements, and meet our cost target
  • Represents the organization as the principal customer contact and generally performs in a program/project leadership role
  • Subject matter expert and process engineer leader on A-List new product development global project teams
  • Influence product roadmap through process innovation
  • Interacts with management and senior customer personnel on matters requiring coordination across organizational guidelines

Experience / Qualifications
• A university degree required (i.e. Bachelors degree) or equivalent relevant work experience.• Must be a team player able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to handle multiple competing tasks and demands

Common Responsibilities
  • Stay up to date with new and emerging trends in small-scale welding technology and techniques, sharing insights with the broader organization.
  • Collaborate with project managers, design/process/mechanization engineering teams, manufacturing teams, and other departments to ensure efficient production and quality.
  • Design weld joints to meet the needs of design engineering teams.
  • Recommend and sometimes conduct inspections and testing of welded subassemblies and structures to discover flaws, ensuring the highest quality of our products. Most often you will be working with our partners in a metallography lab (which is independent of the Welding CoE).
  • Work with Environmental, Safety, and Health teams to ensure that we are meeting local and federal health and safety regulations with the welding processes/equipment we develop.
  • Develop and curate welding best practices, standards, and guidelines throughout the company. Perform cost and project estimates and prepare welding procedure specifications for small-scale welding projects.
  • Recommend materials, pre- and post-weld processing, and geometries. Review, interpret, and create welding blueprints, drawings, specifications, and other production documentation for welding projects.
  • Support other welding/metals/materials-related initiatives as required by our internal customers. This includes new product development, continuous improvement initiatives, and problem-solving quality issues (both internal and external).
  • Apply knowledge of metallurgy and materials to recommend appropriate welding designs and processes.
Preferred Qualifications
Although not required, preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with teams located around the world.
  • Proficiency in CAD software and other engineering design tools.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA).
  • BS/MS/PhD in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, or equivalent
  • High depth of metallurgical knowledge.
  • Experience designing parts and developing manufacturing processes.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and meticulous attention to detail. Ability to break down ambiguous issues into clearly defined problems/goals and an actionable plan.
  • Experience carrying a product from a concept all the way through development and into production.
  • 5+ years of experience experience in welding engineering, particularly small-scale welding
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly.
  • Familiarity with industry safety standards and regulations.
  • Experience applying statistical methods to experimentation (e.g. linear regression, ANOVA). Experience with Six Sigma (e.g. DFSS/DMAIC green/black belt).
