POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Seattle Public Utilities is seeking a Water Treatment Operator to perform maintenance and sustainability of water treatment, delivery of water treatment chemicals, maintenance of water treatment feed, and monitoring equipment to ensure the City of Seattle meets Washington State Department of Health standards. This position is a part of the Drinking Water Quality Division within the Water Line of Business.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operates water treatment equipment to maintain established concentrations of chlorine, fluoride, and corrosion control chemicals in the water being treated and adjusts chemical feed rates as necessary.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair of water treatment equipment.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs of water treatment building, water quality analyzers, sample stands, and flushing station.
  • Has basic knowledge of the principles of water treatment processes and the operation of pumps, motors, and related water treatment equipment to meet the state standard of our water quality throughout our distribution system.
  • Perform routine maintenance and record keeping for accurate reporting and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Assist in the delivery and transport of water treatment chemicals throughout the city.
  • Monitor chlorine residuals and corrosion control chemicals throughout the water system.
  • Performs water sample tests for chlorine, fluoride, pH, alkalinity, temperature, turbidity, and related routine water conditions.

Qualifications

Experience: One (1) year experience in water utility, treatment, distribution, transmission, military or related experience OR
Education: One (1) year of education in an approved waterworks training program
OR a combination of education and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work (e.g., science college courses or programs, construction and repair work, working in a laboratory, working for a public water system).

License:
  • Must have a current State of Washington Driver’s license or ability to obtain the license prior to start date.
Certification and other Requirements:
  • Must be willing to attain a Water Distribution Manager Class I Certification within twelve months of appointment for continued employment. The City will cover the cost of certification and associated training.

  • Willingness to learn new skills and grow within the field.
  • Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with diverse co-workers, community members, vendors and agencies.
  • Skilled handy person with knowledge of the electrical, plumbing, and pipe fitting trades.
  • Critical thinking skills for anticipating events and solving problems, both independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and with written documentation.
  • Water, Wastewater or Stormwater Treatment experience.
  • Demonstrated reliability, follow through, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience with Maximo and PeopleSoft software.
Working Environment/Physical Demands:
  • Stand-by work required on a rotational basis.
  • Requires to work outdoors at times, in all types of weather.
  • Position requires working some evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Requires driving to remote locations daily throughout the water system, pulling a trailer at times.
  • Occasionally work at heights up to 100 feet above ground level.
  • Requires walking, stand, sit, or bend for extended periods of time and work in confined spaces.
  • Requires lifting heavy objects, up to 50 pounds.
  • Schedule is typically Monday-Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

The full salary range for this position is $30.77 - $34.57 Hourly.
