The Opportunity

This role will create a visionary strategy for communications that will support John Hancock in the United States as well as our global approach to Empowering Health and Wellbeing. Reporting to Manulife's Global Chief Communications Officer and John Hancock's President and CEO, this role will be a senior member of both the Global Communications and John Hancock leadership teams, working closely with those colleagues to counsel them and integrate business priorities and communications strategy.

As a key member of the John Hancock Leadership team, the Head of Communications will be accountable for the media relations, issues management, corporate positioning, executive visibility, thought leadership, social media, events, and CEO communications. In order, to integrate and continuously enhance our approach to communications across markets and business lines and scale our work for effect, this leader will most notably oversee a team of direct reports while also convening teams within our Global Communications organization.

Key Accountabilities

  • Drive and manage executive communications and thought leadership opportunities, including high-profile media appearances/interviews, speaking engagements and industry forums.
  • Convene communicators globally who support our various business lines’ approach to Behavioral Insurance and Health, as well as those who bring our Impact Agenda and focus on Empowering Health and Wellbeing to life. Align and scale this team’s work for impact.
  • Maintain an open and proactive dialogue with Leadership Teams, supported by regular reporting, on progress against communications goals while sharing perspectives on what is and isn’t working.
  • Lead communications in various change management projects such as digital transformation, crisis management, partnerships and mergers and acquisitions. Provide strategic oversight and guidance on all enterprise-wide announcements.
  • Ensure timely delivery on commitments made by the communications team.
  • Develop, strengthen, and manage strategic relationships with top-tier media, industry analysts and influencers. Leverage relationships to secure strategic media opportunities that advance John Hancock’s business objectives. Represent John Hancock as a primary spokesperson to media groups and individuals.
  • Be a strategic advisor to John Hancock’s CEO and the John Hancock Leadership Team. Implement and refine an integrated communications strategy that articulates a proactive vision for engaging colleagues and promoting and protecting our brands. Align this strategy with John Hancock business priorities and the Global Communications strategy, ensuring we are acting as one team in support of our overarching mission, strategy, and values.

Pivotal Experience and Expertise

  • Communications Leadership: Deep experience cultivating, developing, and leading a multi-faceted communications function with solid knowledge and exposure of highly regulated or financial services business.
  • Global mindset: Experience in senior leadership within a global matrix organization. Experience leading both direct and indirect / matrixed teams that are culturally and geographically diverse.
  • Executive Communication/Stakeholder Management: Experience communicating with and gaining buy-in from a broad range of stakeholders, and experience collaborating and working closely with stakeholders to achieve business goals.
  • Customer and Digital Savvy: Experience crafting communications in a fast moving, consumer-focused organization. Strong understanding of digital channels and media for communications and experience guiding an organization through significant digital transformation.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate a focus on compelling storytelling and measurable results. A collaborative, transparent leader who can communicate a vision and engage individuals to work towards shared objectives. This role requires a highly visible individual who can collaborate across the company and with key external stakeholders, leveraging relationships and expertise to build trust, credibility, and successful partnerships inside and outside the company.

Qualifications

  • Ability to lead and influence collaboration, accountability, and innovation across the business and functional areas.

  • Strong project management skills with demonstrated ability to plan and manage multiple complex projects concurrently and establish priorities.
  • Result-oriented with a proven execution background with ability to multi-task, prioritize multiple initiatives and develop solutions where blueprints may not exist.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications with an advanced degree or certifications a plus.
  • A proven track record of liaising with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Possess the ability to move forward decisively and promptly on projects while at the same time gaining the needed support, buy-in, consensus, and perspectives at all levels in the organization that will lead to widespread stakeholder support of projects.
  • Minimum 10-15 years of leadership experience in an executive strategy role.
  • Promote innovation and creative thinking to stimulate new product and service market knowledge.
  • Superior communication skills, both verbal and written, with varying audiences in a matrixed, geographically dispersed environment.

The annual base salary for this role is listed below.

Salary range is expected to be between

$211,600.00 USD - $393,500.00 USD

The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training. Employees also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs and earn incentive compensation tied to business and individual performance.
