Position: Vice President Biology (full-time/remote)
#Actinobiology, #Life Sciences, #Respiratory Diseases, #Microbiology, #Photobiology
Company Summary
XCMR leads in the innovation of wearable, portable and stationary devices to inactivate pathogens rapidly and safely in air and on surfaces. Near-field Infection Protection (NIP) is what drives XCMR's next generation of biodefense solutions that revolutionize current infection control capabilities to improve health security for all populations.
Position Summary:
The VP Biology (VPB) will oversee three key areas of research and development:1) the creation and application of biological testing systems to assess inactivation of microorganisms utilizing Far UVC irradiation; 2) generation and transmission of aerosol particles containing respiratory pathogens; and 3) analysis of the size, distribution and composition of such aerosol particles. The VPB will coordinate these efforts with those of the VP Product Engineering to combine biological, mechanical, electrical, and photonics data for the development of XCMR’s next generation Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The VPB will report directly to the CEO and work together with an exceptional multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers and business experts in an inclusive culture that thrives on mutual respect, integrity, and passion to empower the XCMR team to realize breakthrough scientific achievements.Although XCMR is based in the Philadelphia area, it currently operates virtually with team members arrayed across the United States and the United Kingdom.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate weekly meetings to communicate progress, issues, solutions and amended workplans with the broader cross-functional development team including XCMR’s PMO, Regulatory/Safety Affairs, technical consultants and both academic and medical advisors.
- Design the test instrumentation for the “front end” generation of aerosol particles with correct composition and size distribution as well as for the “back end” capture to assess the rate and efficiency of microbial inactivation using XCMR Far UVC prototypes.
- Negotiate cost-effective contracts with external organizations (e.g., CROs, academia, and government laboratories) for the development and execution of microbiological testing of XCMR test platforms as well as manage their workplans and performance for budget and schedule.
- Rapidly assess Far UVC PPE prototypes for their ability to inactivate model organisms to enable rapid prototyping and engineering improvements in coordination with the VP of Product Engineering and the industrial design team.
- Understand, master, and utilize the physical and biological compositions of aerosols generated in the upper and lower respiratory tracts to maximize inactivation of human pathogens by Far UVC.
- Draft, edit, and oversee grant application sections containing microbiological work streams for USG agencies in close collaboration with the CEO, leveraging XCMR’s Engineering, Project Management, Life Science Affairs, Government Affairs, and Academic Partner teams.
- Maintain knowledge and expertise at the intersection of aerosol biology, microbiology, photo-inactivation or photo-degradation known as actinobiology.
Required Skills/Experiences:
- Experience with FDA regulated medical devices preferred.
- Extensive knowledge or ability to rapidly master each of the three disciplines encompassed by XCMR work (aerosols, microbiological assays, photo-inactivation) and ability to understand and communicate with the engineering team and its disciplines (photonics, mechanical engineering and computational fluid dynamics).
- Successful microbiological research and development in the biopharmaceutical, pulmonology, diagnostics, medical device, or industrial hygiene industries, with as much relevance to the three areas of responsibility as possible (aerosols, microbiological assays, photo-inactivation).
- Expertise in project management, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with submitting and executing US Government grants and/or contracts for biotechnology development.
- PhD biological science discipline with minimum 10 years’ experience.
- Entrepreneurial, self-starter, and sense of humor consistent with a startup environment.
Compensation:
- Equity options commensurate with a development stage company.
- Competitive cash compensation with a bonus plan.
- Competitive and comprehensive benefits package, including a 401k plan.
