Job Description

Vice President of Engineering
The Vice President of Engineering is responsible for the overall planning, organization, and execution of all engineering activities. Reporting directly to the COO, the VP of Engineering will provide strategic direction, technical leadership, and overall performance of the engineering team. This role requires a strong combination of technical expertise, leadership skills, and business acumen within the medical device industry.

Job Responsibilities
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with the product management, operations, supply chain and quality assurance teams to align engineering efforts with business objectives, market needs, and customer requirements.
  • Integration planning & execution: Lead the engineering effort for potential add-on acquisitions including product & technology rationalization, IP due diligence, engineering organization & culture, systems & tools, and process standardization, etc.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate technical risks and obstacles to ensure successful project outcomes and mitigate potential negative impacts.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide strategic guidance and technical expertise to the global engineering team, ensuring the development of innovative, reliable, and efficient medical device solutions. This includes current products & technologies in addition to acquired technology platforms & products.
  • Talent Acquisition and Development: Attract top engineering talent, build a high-performing team, and foster a culture of learning and professional growth within the engineering department.
  • Technology Roadmap: Develop and execute a technology roadmap to drive continuous innovation, incorporating emerging technologies and industry trends to maintain a competitive edge.
  • Resource Allocation: Optimize resource allocation, budgeting, and planning to maximize productivity and deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Product Development: Oversee the end-to-end product development process, from concept to commercialization, manufacturing, sustaining and lifecycle management, ensuring adherence to quality standards, regulatory requirements, and project timelines.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and certifications throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Team Management: Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of engineers, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers, to achieve departmental goals and deliver high-quality products.
Objectives
  • Work with other executives to develop long-term strategies for the organization
  • Oversee all global engineering departments and projects
  • Ensure that engineering projects are completed on time and within budget
  • Evaluate new technologies
  • Develop robust engineering workstreams including development pipeline & status, new product development/introduction, etc.
  • Monitor trends in the engineering field and keep abreast of new developments
Job Skills & Qualifications Needed
  • Quality and Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with ISO 13485, FDA regulations, and other relevant quality and regulatory standards applicable to the medical device industry.
  • Strategic Thinking: Proven ability to develop and execute strategic plans, drive innovation, and make data-driven decisions to achieve business objectives.
  • Acquisition: Experience in engineering due diligence and integration execution is preferred.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a track record of successfully overcoming technical challenges and delivering high-quality solutions.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of progressive engineering experience, including at least 5 years in a leadership role within the medical device industry or a related field.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field. A Master’s degree in engineering or business administration is preferred.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams, executive leadership, and external stakeholders.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated experience leading and managing a multidisciplinary engineering team, including hiring, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or software engineering, with a deep understanding of product development processes and regulatory requirements within the medical device industry.
  • Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment, and to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
