Veterinary Technician - Rangos Research Bldg
The individual will serve as a Veterinary Technician within the Division of Laboratory and Animal Resources (DLAR). The individual will assist DLAR veterinarians with the provision of veterinary medical care, the preventive medicine program, and perform veterinary technical procedures under the direction of a veterinarian. The individual will also periodically provide support for the daily operations of the animal facility that may involve husbandry or cage wash activities. The successful candidate must demonstrate professional and positive verbal, written, and interpersonal skills and effective time and process management. The position requires successful enrollment in the University of Pittsburgh Animal Exposure Surveillance Program and other medical surveillance/immunization programs as dictated by the current research activities and when applicable. Vaccinations and/or TB testing may be required. The successful candidate must be able to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions, maintain accurate and legible records and other forms of documentation, consistently demonstrate positive interpersonal and customer service skills, be available to work weekends and holidays, stand for extended periods of time, lift 50 pounds, push/pull heavy equipment, pass the mandatory criminal, social background checks, and Child Protection Clearances.
Internal candidates:
- One year of experience working with animals in a DLAR facility with a minimum of 6 months of experience working with non-rodent mammalian species OR six months of experience working with animals in a DLAR facility and graduation from an AVMA CVTEA (Committee on Veterinary Technician Education Activities) accredited veterinary technician program
- Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level.
External candidates:
- Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level within 12 months of start date.
- One year of veterinary technician experience working with a variety of animals in a research, clinical, or zoo setting OR graduation from an AVMA CVTEA (Committee on Veterinary Technician Education Activities) accredited veterinary technician program
All candidates:
- Ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE) appropriate for the species, animal housing conditions, or work area
- Basic computer skills including the ability to utilize common applications (e.g., email, Word, Excel).
- Ability to lift/move 50 pounds
- Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance procedures on mechanical equipment, animal caging, and other equipment commonly utilized throughout the animal facility
- Ability to work directly with a variety of laboratory animal species
The following are desired or preferred:
- Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science or a similar biological science
- Licensed, certified, or registered veterinary technician status.
- Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level
- Completion of an AVMA CVTEA (Committee on Veterinary Technician Education Activities) accredited veterinary technician program
