The Veterinary Technician I (VT), under minimal supervision, monitors the health and well-being of all animals within multiple facilities, including but not limited to, nonhuman primates, swine, sheep, ferrets, mink, and rabbits and rodents. The VT provides surgical support, including pre-, intra- and postoperative care, involving all species. The VT, upon advice of the veterinarian, administers or schedules treatments to ill or injured animals or for preventive purposes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Administer medications and treatments to laboratory animals according to a prescribed protocol.
2. Provide care to animals on clinical rounds.
3. Provide surgical support, including pre-, intra- and postoperative care.
4. Conduct standard sterile operating room procedures ensuring all instruments and
materials are appropriately prepared and available for use.
5. Assist veterinarian and researchers with surgical procedures and tests.
6. Maintain records on anesthetics, post-operative and clinical rounds according to protocol.
7. Assist with cleaning, organizing, and re-stocking the Operating Room area and all surgical suites.
8. Assist with Operating Room and surgical suite equipment maintenance and operation.
9. Ensure staff and laboratory personnel are compliant with all regulatory agencies.
10. Coordinate imports and exports of rodent species including live animal and frozen embryos/gametes. The VT will coordinate with the Transgenic Core and external providers for cryopreservation, rederivation, and reconstitution. This includes communicating with donating and receiving institutions to organize animals including facility and health information necessary for animal shipments.
11. Oversee and maintain the rodent sentinel and quarantine programs, this includes
ordering sentinel animals, coordinating health testing, and submitting animals or samples with accompanying requisitions to the Comparative Pathology Lab.
12. May assist with billing and charges for veterinary services.
13. Perform other related duties as needed.
Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
1-3 years closely related experience with animals, preferably in a laboratory research setting, or equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience.
Licensing and Certification Requirements
Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) required at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level or Associates Degree or LVT with 6 months experience with animals in a laboratory research setting.
Compensation
The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $27.57 - $28.97 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
