Job Description

Veterinarian

Position Summary

  • Manages the medical aspects of animal transitions.
  • Provides veterinary care including diagnostic testing, preventative care, and medical and surgical treatment for animal collection.
  • Plays a key role on the Animal Welfare Committee, Animal Collection Plan, and other committees.
  • Ensures compliance with all state, federal and other regulations/guidelines.
  • Ensures high level of care following industry and AAZV best standards
  • Oversees dietary and nutritional needs of animals.
  • Keeps accurate and detailed medical records using Species 360 ZIMS.
  • Manages the Veterinary Technician position.
  • Consults with contracted veterinary services when necessary.
  • Enjoys interacting with visitors and participating in education and conservation programming.
  • Instructs and educates Zookeepers along with Zoo staff on veterinary subjects.
  • Participates in Species Survival Program (SSP) research when needed.
  • Communicates effectively with all ages and backgrounds both internally and externally on behalf of the zoo for veterinary areas.
  • Performs postmortem exams and prepares sample submissions for histopathology and other testing.

Experience & Education Required

  • Candidate must be able to secure a State of Michigan Veterinary Medical License, DEA license and USDA accreditation category II.
  • Managing constituents and collaborating with others.
  • Strong knowledge and experience working with exotic and domestic species for both large and small animals.
  • Graduate of accredited veterinary medical college with DVM, VMD or equivalent.

  • $70,000 - $90,000

We are Champions for animals and children; We create extraordinary experiences for all. Our vision is to be the BEST little zoo in Michigan! The Zoo is situated on ten acres of landscaped brick pathways featuring beautiful gardens, animal habitats, a miniature train, and the region’s only hand-carved carousel. The Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and participates in several Species Survival Plans (SSP): including the North American river otter, African black-footed penguins, cotton-top tamarins, and Mexican grey wolf.
