Job Description

Responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of the Program of Veterinary Care. Directs and oversees business operations of the Center for Comparative Physiology (CCP).

Job Responsibility

1.Contributes to the strategic planning and development of the Animal Research Program and facilities.
2.Manages the veterinary and laboratory animal care staff in the Center for Comparative Physiology (CCP).
3.Budgeting and oversight of the Center for Comparative Physiology (CCP) facilities (including physical plant and maintenance).
4.As a member of the Animal Care Program leadership team, the Veterinarian provides direction and guidance to ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation bodies and foster strong communications with investigators, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and the animal care staff.
5.The Veterinarian serves as a member of the IACUC with duties that include reviewing animal use protocols, assisting with policy improvements, supporting investigators in protocol development, assuring quality animal care, and participating in semiannual program review and inspections.
6.Develops and implements standard operating procedures and training for animal research and animal care programs according to all applicable federal, state local regulations, accrediting bodies, and industry standards.
7.Recommends safety equipment and facility requirements to monitor exposure to biological, chemical and physical hazards in accordance with federal, state and local regulations.
8.Supports and contributes to ensure maintenance of the Public Health Service (PHS) Assurance, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) registration, and New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) permits, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration, Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement (BNE) license, and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) accreditation.
9.Ensures compliance of animal facilities via inspections. Monitors and modifies sentinel program for infectious disease outbreaks, as required.
10.Provides staff training including experimental handling and manipulations such as anesthesia, analgesia, experimental surgery, post surgical care and euthanasia.
11.Interprets and reports on diagnostic laboratory data, including necropsy, histopathology, immunocytochemistry, electron microscopy, hematology, biochemistry and cytology.
12.Participates with architects, engineers and Institute leadership in the planning, design and construction of animal facilities. Makes recommendations regarding adequate and appropriate physical environment, housing and space requirements. Inspects and reports on results of construction.
13.Oversees the business operations of the Center for Comparative Physiology including development of budgets, capital expenditures and revenue.
14.Submits papers for publication as appropriate.

Job Qualification

  • 8-12 years of relevant experience and 7+ years of leadership/ management experience, required.
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD), required;
  • Certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM), required.
  • Licensed to practice as a Veterinarian in the state of New York, required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in laboratory animal medicine, required.
