Job Description
Description

The purpose of the class is to operate heavy and/or specialized equipment in the maintenance and/or construction of County roads, water/sewer systems and stormwater systems and in support of other Public Works Operations; to maintain assigned equipment; and to perform other work as required. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provides leadership to less experience equipment operators as required.
  • Uses hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required.
  • Manually loads/unloads materials onto vehicles.
  • Washes lines with pull behind washer.
  • Performs routine landscaping work at job sites as necessary.
  • May operate dump trucks, service trucks, and other trucks, motor graders, bull dozers, bob cats, front-end loaders, skid steers, bush hogs, back hoes, track hoes, rollers, packers, compactors, trailers, tractors, low boys, fork lifts, etc.
  • Removes debris from drainage pipes, box culverts and other storm drainage structures.
  • Inspects equipment to ensure proper and safe working conditions; reports defects or required maintenance to the supervisor.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.
  • Assists pump station crews.
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.
  • May perform cement/concrete work.
  • Cleans pump stations, sewer lines and manholes.
  • Uses welding and cutting torches as needed in equipment maintenance.
  • Performs hydro excavation of sewer lines as needed.
  • May operate a vac-truck with hydraulic and water pump to clean sewer lines, cross lines and drain pipes, pump stations and lift stations.
  • Works with camera crew; smoke tests man hole for leaks.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
  • Operates heavy equipment to excavate and compact earth, cut roadways and ditches, remove trees, grade land, build ponds, build roads, load/unload materials, move/haul materials, maintain County properties, install pipe and perform other general or specialized functions of the Public Works Department.
  • Attends training as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED.
Requires at least two (2) years of related work experience.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid state CDL driver's license with appropriate endorsements.
