The Unit Clerk is responsible for the clerical functions of a behavioral health unit. Responsibilities include maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment, and supporting the clinical team through effective paper flow, communications and record keeping.

  • May assist in patient care duties and rounds completion as assigned.
  • Never discusses or releases patient identifiable information unless properly authorized to do so.
  • Performs related tasks as requested by the House Supervisor/Charge Nurse, such as answering the phones, filing, audits, and performance improvement requiring limited supervision.
  • Always safeguards and preserves the confidentiality of patient identifiable information in accordance with hospital and departmental policy.
  • Collaborates with hospital personnel and medical staff to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Refrains from reading or discussing patient information with others except as necessary to carry out departmental tasks.
  • Faxes and/or mails appropriate documentation as needed.
  • Assumes and/or performs additional duties as requested.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:

  • Current CPR certification required
  • Experience in a psychiatric setting preferred
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
  • Must be able to perform concentrated and/or complex mental activity with frequent involvement in complex and/or highly technical situations;
  • Must be able to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles;
  • Must be able to work successfully under highly stressful conditions;
  • Must be able to collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion;
  • Must have effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s License in order to transport patients and/or staff, or drive hospital vehicles.
  • Must be capable of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis;
  • Must be able to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures;
  • Must be able to interact positively with patients whose behavior may be difficult, uncooperative or aggressive;
