Job Title: Underwriting Assistant
Employee Status: Regular
Schedule:Full time
Location:Hybrid - defined as three days in office if residence is within 50 miles of Westfield Center, OH or Remote - if residence is over 50 miles from service office.

Responsibilities :
- Reviews individual accounts for exposure identification and acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards. Sets up new business and/or renewal business applications for quoting, coordinates timely turnaround with Quoter/Account Examiner and reviews quote for accuracy. When necessary will quote new business.
- Prepares information for underwriting meetings; coordinates and participates in the meetings when appropriate.
- Orders and analyzes investigative reports (MVR’s, loss control reports and surveys, financials, D&B’s, Predictive Underwriting, etc.) on present or potential customers. Reviews and takes action on business income worksheets, estimates of value, statements of value, and other key underwriting information.
- May travel occasionally in order to participate in meetings, special assignments, training, and/or travel between office locations.
- Utilizes sound judgment and applicable experience to assist team with new business/renewal business/endorsement and makes underwriting decisions within their assigned authority.
- Provides 5.3 processing support if technology is available and other underwriting support as needed. Maintains an operating knowledge of Westfield standardized hardware, software programs, third-party software (MS Office), and processing procedures.
- Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends, internal processes and procedures, and shares this information with team members. Relied upon to provide training and support to new underwriting assistants that are hired. Shares company best practices and procedures with new team members.
- Proactively supports underwriter on renewals by ordering and analyzing reports, gathering information, and providing a checklist of what the underwriter needs to address at renewal. Coordinates renewal file information with the appropriate renewal underwriters and examiners when it is sent to them from an agency.
- Proactively supports the Field, Underwriters, and Leaders in achieving their revenue, retention, and profit goals.
- Develops, maintains and builds upon strong relationships with key producers, agency personnel, and external/internal customers and team members. Participates in agency meetings, monthly renewal meetings, meetings with insureds, and visits to the insured’s location.
- Cooperates and collaborates with others in the unit and company in executing business strategies and plans.
- Gathers outstanding information from agents and customers and sets up issue instructions when an order is received from the agent/customer.
Qualifications:
- Physical essential functions: ability to work 40 hours in an office environment (sitting, standing, on a computer, etc.), operate office related technology (computer, phone, etc.), travel as required.
- Experience organizing various work priorities while ensuring deadlines are met.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills resulting in the ability to effectively interact with all levels of management and employee population.
- Experience working with customers providing strong and consistent customer service.
- Valid driver’s license and a driving record that conforms to company standards.
- 5+ years of experience in the property and casualty industry.
- Proven ability to use experience and independent judgment to complete file documentation including pricing rationale.
- Experience utilizing independent judgment to adjust new business quotes, new policy issuance, and renewal policy issuance/endorsement to reflect agency personnel new/renewal change requests based on their assigned underwriting authority.
- High School diploma, GED equivalent, or commensurate experience.
