Description of Work Unit
The College of Business at Colorado State University is an AACSB accredited business school which enrolls more than 4,400 undergraduate students in nine business concentrations and approximately 1,500 graduate students across eight graduate programs. While we are the largest undergraduate and graduate major on campus, we strive to create a small college environment. Colorado State University invites nominations and applications for an Undergraduate Academic Advisor. This is a 12-month administrative professional position eligible for University benefits. The position will work within the College of Business within the Undergraduate Programs Office and will report to the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Programs.

The Unit is responsible for all undergraduate recruiting efforts, retention initiatives, academic advising, diversity/inclusivity initiatives, and GO Abroad initiatives.
Position Summary
The Academic Advisor position in the College of Business Undergraduate Programs Department provide advisory services for all Undergraduate Business Majors (approximately 2400 students) at Colorado State University, including concentrations in Accounting, Computer Information Systems, Finance, Financial Planning, Human Resource Management, International Business, Organization and Innovation Management, Marketing, Real Estate, and Supply Chain Management. In addition, all Business Administration, Real Estate, and Entrepreneurship minors (approximately 2000 students) and all Business Certificates are advised by Advisors. The UPO also supports many undergraduate student groups, activities and programs.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, diversity support services, and diversity programming training and education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Human Development and Family Studies, Student Affairs, or related field;
  • Two years of experience in higher education academic advising;
  • Experience with program development, and event planning, organizing, and implementation;
  • Experience working with historically underrepresented, ethnically/racially diverse students
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Human Development and Family Studies, Student Affairs, or related field.
  • Knowledge of higher education technology systems (preferably Banner, Slate, and Navigate);
  • Understanding and knowledge of higher education philosophy and practices (particularly Land Grant);
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with students
  • Strong listening, paraphrasing, summarizing, and problem solving skills;
  • Strong customer-service skills, and ability to successfully work with multiple constituents including students, parents, faculty, and staff;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple programs and resources;

  • Adapt university policies and processes, advising resources, electronic databases, degree requirements, CSU Online policies and processes to students with Business majors.
  • Interpret curriculum requirements, options, sequencing patterns and best practices across programs while exploring student’s goals, developing academic plans, and understanding student’s challenges, and obstacles.
  • Act as mentors and advocates and professionally communicate with students or families regarding complex academic policies, individual courses or grades, and/or tuition assessment and lead them to understanding and resolution.
  • Interpret conflict management and conflict resolution decision-making skills when working with dissatisfied individuals. Interpret, apply and enforce University and College of Business policies and procedures, as well as State and Federal laws.
  • Approve and administer course substitutions and waivers for degree requirements.
  • Conduct website analysis for consistency and quality assurance.
  • Approve and administer business course overrides for business majors.
  • Formulate transfer credit evaluations and determine transfer credit eligibility.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed advising notes through the online system, track advisees’ performance at the end of each semester, and provide intentional outreach to particular groups of students such as students with low GPA’s and/or low midterm grades.
  • Manage and update advising publications, websites, degree plans, and other resources.
  • Assist new students in transitioning to and navigating the collegiate experience; developing decision-making skills, and utilizing campus resources.
  • Performance of advising activities regarding course selection and sequencing, registration, class schedule revisions, and class credit load recommendations.
  • Advise students requesting retroactive withdrawals and academic dismissal appeals on how to create well-written appeals and how to develop and communicate a comprehensive action plan for academic improvement and success
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, compassion, and relevant ability with, culturally diverse communities among potential target and constituent populations.
  • Provide comprehensive advising to students establishing continuous advising relationships for the first three years with attention to transition and major exploration.
  • Implementation of strategic interventions; initiating proactive outreach with at risk students and participate in retention and grade monitoring activities.
  • Model personal and professional ethics in every decision made.
  • Learn new technology and tools designed for student success and integrate them into a balanced and holistic approach to advising.
  • Understand issues confronting under-represented students, ethnically diverse, military veterans, non-traditional aged, international, parents, disabled students, etc. and help them navigate how and what resources to use as well as gain confidence and connection in order to achieve their personal and professional goals.
  • Counsel students regarding options and academic standing, including students on academic probation and students dismissed from the University.
  • Challenge and support undergraduate Business students (via individual meetings, workshops, and programs) to understand the complexities of self-discovery and to begin the process of choosing a concentration and career, including problem solving around difficulties or unrealistic goals and outside pressures.
