The Writing Center at the University of Tennessee at Martin is accepting applications for a regular, part-time (10-29 hours per week) Tutor (Professional Writing Consultant). At the UTM Writing Center, consultants and tutors assist UTM students with their writing projects on a walk-in basis. Tutors guide students at any stage of the writing process, including, but not limited to, understanding the assignment, brainstorming, drafting, research strategies, formatting, and grammar. Our goal is to work together with our clients to develop their skills and confidence as writers. Questions may be directed to Dr. Kelle Alden (Humanities 131G, [email protected])
Main Job Duties:
- One-on-one and group tutoring with UTM students
- Mentorship of student tutors
- Data collection
- Administrative tasks as assigned
- Presentations, workshops, and roundtables
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Typically requires a high school diploma and three years of relevant experience, or equivalent and college courses in subject matter
- Enthusiasm for the learning process and for helping students succeed in their goals
- A working knowledge of documentation styles, such as APA, MLA, ASA, and/or Chicago
- Computer skills, including familiarity with Word, PowerPoint, Canvas, and Zoom
- A flexible and adaptable approach to new methods of working and learning
- The ability to manage your own schedule and be reliable, organized, and punctual
- Leadership and mentoring skills
- Experience tutoring and/or teaching writing
- In-person and virtual communication skills
- A sincere, hardworking, empathetic, patient, reflective, and caring attitude
- Experience working in a writing center
- Experience with administrative work of any kind
- Some evening and weekend availability
- Bachelor's degree
- Graduate study or certifications in ESL, English, Education, or related subjects

Minimum hiring rate $17.00 per hour (Market Range 04) - Salary commensurate with education and experience
