Job Description
Brief Description


Purpose of Job


This position is responsible for maintaining a database of information on patients diagnosed with cancer for physicians and research studies. Maintains, retrieves, and analyzes records of the patient's history, diagnosis, therapy and outcome. In addition, supports the cancer committee and the Commission on Cancer accreditation process (CoC).


Job Functions


  • Assists with CoC survey and accreditation process, specifically completing the SARS on line.
  • Performs case finding, cancer data entry, and quality assurance of data.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs monthly patient follow-up by searching all available databases, patient and physician letters and death sources.
  • Provides support for cancer committee, tumor board, case review conferences, by completing all necessary arrangements and follow-up correspondence.
  • Assists with cancer committee activities.
  • Releases information to authorized sources.
  • Interprets and prepares data for cancer studies and quality initiatives.
  • Ensures compliance with American College of Surgeons and Minnesota State Cancer Registry requirements.
  • Maintains all registry logs, including accession register, suspense file, and master patient index.
  • Prepares reports and graphs of registry data for cancer-related discussions.


Employment Requirements


Minimum Education/Work Experience/License/Certifications


  • 1+ years of experience
  • Tumor Registrar certification
  • Associate's degree in Cancer Information Management


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities


  • Demonstrated professional approach and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Expert computer and data skills including cancer registry databases, spreadsheets, and graphic software
  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Knowledge of Program accreditation standards by ACOS, AJCC staging guidelines, ICD-9 coding, Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS), Indiana State Cancer Registry Report Manual, SEER staging


Preferred Qualifications


  • 3-5 years of experience
  • Experience with CoC survey and accreditation process
