Job Description

Position Summary

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the timely, respectful and efficient transport of deceased individuals who fall within the jurisdiction of the Lancaster County Coroner's Office.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The incumbent reports to the First Deputy Coroner.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Log deceased individuals into the Forensic Center
  • Communicate with deputies for coordination with outside agencies during removals
  • Maintain appropriate stock of supplies within the transport vehicles
  • Ensure equipment is in good working condition and report any issues to the supervisor
  • Input transport information into the electronic case management system
  • Occasional weekend and holiday rotation required
  • Respond to scenes in a county vehicle arriving within one hour of request
  • Ensure that the deceased individual is appropriately placed in a human remains pouch with proper identification tags
  • Safely and respectfully maneuvers deceased individuals in a variety of conditions
  • Maintain portable equipment in response ready condition ie. scene lighting, Litters, generators etc.
  • Routinely clean transport vehicles and equipment
  • Receive and respond to requests for transportation assistance from deputies
  • Weigh deceased individuals and place into proper refrigeration units
  • Ensure that a transport form is completed
  • Assess scenes for any hazards that prevent safe removal of a deceased individual


OTHER SPECIFIC TASKS OR DUTIES

  • Provides weekly washing of all vehicles and ensures appropriate stock levels.
  • Maintains order and cleanliness of morgue coolers.
  • Inspects and maintains disaster shed, shelters, supplies and equipment in response ready condition
  • Responsible for maintainence and spot cleaning of the sally port, biohazard storage room, and chemical closet.
  • Provides routine scheduled maintainence on all portable equipment and personal protective equipment.
  • This position is responsible for agency vehicle fleet management to include scheduling and coordinating maintenance,cleaning and record keeping for all vehicles and trailers.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Previous experience with EMS, fire department, or funeral service is preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of personal protective equipment and proper use
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions
  • Ability to safely operate a vehicle under stressful and difficult conditions
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Ability to work in a variety of conditions to include extreme weather, extreme clutter, unpleasant odor, and exposure to biohazardous fluids
  • Strong communication skills


REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/CLEARANCES

  • A current and valid Pennsylvania driver's license
  • Ability to pass pre-employment criminal background investigation, drug screening and driver's record check
  • EVOC within 2 years
  • Annual Biohazard awareness training
