Job Description


We want you to join our team! The Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking a Transport Driver for the Iowa DOT Statewide Warehouse/Distribution Center. As a Transport Driver, you will provide Delivery and Transportation needs for a wide variety of inventory supplies and materials and heavy equipment for our customers throughout the Iowa DOT, as well as over a thousand eligible external customers. You will work closely with the 16-person warehouse receiving, distribution and transport team and others to assure all seasonal and year-round inventory items as well as many special loads are delivered to our statewide customers as needed throughout the year.

  • Operate tractor trailers, heavy-duty trucks, end loaders, tractors, van trailers, flatbeds and lowboys to transport equipment, supplies, materials, heavy cargo, and special deliveries, etc.
  • Inspects tires, lights, and brakes; checks fuel and oil levels; performs and coordinates basic maintenance and emergency roadside repairs, etc.
  • Support Warehouse operations and the picking, packing, and loading of equipment and supplies utilizing computerized software systems, barcode readers, iPads, etc.
  • Family: $180/mo. employee share; $1,624.00/mo. state share

Where you'll work:

  • The Transportation Driver will work closely with the four other Transport Drivers, seven Warehouse Receiving and Distribution Parts Workers, three Storekeeper 3’s all under the direction and leadership of the Warehouse Supervisor
  • The Iowa DOT Ames Warehouse is over 24,000 sq. ft of interior storage with a large exterior storage area
  • Will work closely with all DOT customers statewide

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
  • A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where satisfactory completion of a truck driving program approved by the Iowa Department of Education from an accredited college or vocational school equals six months of full-time experience.
  • Two years of full-time work experience in operating heavy trucks or tractor-trailers exceeding four tons.

Additional Qualification Requirements
  • Positions in this class require a possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained to continue employment.
  • Positions in this class are required to complete a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in a random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to federal drug and alcohol testing regulations (in conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, parts 40 and 382).
