Civil Service Testing
:
The Civil Service Exam for this position will be a Training and Experience Questionnaire. All applicants interested in consideration must complete the Training and Experience questions attached at the end of this job posting. Training and Experience Questionnaires will be evaluated and given a score. The score received will be the candidate's Civil Service Exam score and will determine the candidate's rank on the eligibility list. It is, therefore, in the candidate's best interest to answer each question completely and thoroughly.

Traffic Signal Technician I
DESCRIPTION

Under direct supervision, perform skilled installation, maintenance and repair of a variety of electrical systems and equipment used in street lighting, traffic signal controls, circuits, motors and controls, wiring, communication systems and related equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class in the traffic signal technician series, expected to perform duties under direct supervision.

Traffic Signal Technician II
DESCRIPTION
Perform skilled installation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of electrical systems and equipment used in street lighting, traffic signal controls, circuits, motors and controls, wiring, communication systems and related equipment. Operate a variety of hand and power tools.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the experienced class of the Traffic Signal Technician series. Incumbent is expected to perform the full range of electrical and electronic installation, maintenance and repair duties required for city facility and system installation and maintenance independently or under minimal supervision.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications to continue in the recruitment process:

Traffic Signal Technician I
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of experience in electrical work.

Completion of coursework in electrical mathematics, basic electricity, industrial electronics and electrical codes is preferred.

Licenses and Certificates
:
Must possess within one (1) year of hire and maintain throughout employment IMSA Work Zone Safety certification.

Must possess within one (1) year of hire and maintain throughout employment IMSA Traffic Signal Level I Field Technician certification.

Must possess as soon as available and maintain throughout employment IMSA Roadway Lighting Level I certification.

Must possess as soon as available and maintain throughout employment IMSA Traffic Signal Inspection certification.

Must possess within thirty (30) days of hire and maintain throughout employment the equivalent to a valid Nevada Class C driver's license.

A Nevada Class A CDL driver's license with tanker and combination vehicle endorsements is preferred.

Traffic Signal Technician II
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of experience in electrical work and two (2) years of experience equivalent to the City's class of Traffic Signal Technician I.

Completion of coursework in electrical mathematics, basic electricity, industrial electronics and electrical codes is preferred.

Licenses and Certificates
:
Must possess at time of hire and maintain throughout employment IMSA Work Zone Safety certification.

Must possess at time of hire and maintain throughout employment IMSA Roadway Lighting Level I certification.

Must possess at time of hire and maintain throughout employment IMSA Traffic Signal Inspection certification.

Must possess at time of hire and maintain throughout employment IMSA Traffic Signal Level I Field Technician certification.

Must possess within one (1) year of hire and maintain throughout employment IMSA Traffic Signal Level II Field Technician certification.

Must possess within thirty (30) days of hire and maintain throughout employment the equivalent to a valid Nevada Class C driver's license.

Examples of Essential Duties


Traffic Signal Technician I
Inspect, install, maintain, repair and test electrical and electronic systems and equipment, circuits, transformers, switches, streetlights, traffic signals, lighting fixtures, motor starters, motors, generators, outlets, control panels, cathodic protection systems, communication networks and related electrical systems.

Perform electrical services at extended heights and in confined space areas. Operate a truck and power take-off equipment in performing assigned work. Maintain accurate records of work performed and equipment used to perform duties.

Perform preventive maintenance on electrical and electronic systems in many environments such as but not limited to medians, roadways, high traffic areas and shoulders.

Locate City electrical and communication underground lines for City construction and other utilities and contractors. Install conduit and pull wire for motors, control panels, lighting fixtures, outlets, street and traffic lighting and other purposes. Make cable splices of various sizes and difficulty as required.

Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair or replace a variety of electrical and electronic equipment.

Make or modify as-built drawings of electrical installations. Use or develop electrical and electronic test equipment and apparatus. Perform phase balancing operations and may make load computations on electrical circuits.

Make estimates of labor, materials, and supplies required to perform specific assignments. Order supplies as needed.

Perform other duties which may be assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of codes, ordinances and regulations pertaining to the work
  • Knowledge of principles, techniques, and materials used in the electrical and electronic trades
  • Ability to work on high voltage electrical circuits, street signal controls and other specialized installations
  • Knowledge of basic microcomputer applications related to the work
  • Knowledge of and ability to maintain and operate a variety of hand, power, shop and other tools, and test equipment common to electrical and electronic work
  • Ability to train others in work procedures
  • Ability to make accurate mathematic calculations
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to prepare accurate records of work performed
  • Ability to use computer applications and software related to the work including but not limited to Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of safe work methods and ability to follow safety regulations pertaining to the work
  • Knowledge of AC/DC theory and control circuits
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, plans and specifications
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted during work

Physical Demands
:
Requires sufficient vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to perform assigned duties and sufficient strength and stamina to perform sustained heavy physical labor. Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to sixty (60) lbs. Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions with exposure to heavy traffic and other hazards. Must be able to perform work while working in medians, roadways, high traffic areas and shoulders. And requires occasional ability to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment.

Traffic Signal Technician II

Work with traffic industry experts on installation of new components within our traffic system. Program components and install them in the field.

Locate City electrical and communication underground lines for City construction and other utilities and contractors. Install conduit and pull wire for motors, control panels, lighting fixtures, outlets, street and traffic lighting and other purposes. Make cable splices of various sizes and difficulty as required.

Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair or replace a variety of electrical and electronic equipment. Troubleshoot a variety of traffic and ITS components and make operational changes in a high stress work environment.

Make or modify as-built drawings of electrical installations. Use or develop electrical and electronic test equipment and apparatus. Perform phase balancing operations and may make load computations on electrical circuits.

Make estimates of labor, materials, and supplies required to perform specific assignments. Order supplies as needed.

Mentor and train others in work knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Perform other duties which may be assigned.
