SUMMARY OF DUTIES
:
Constructs, maintains, repairs, inspects and dismantles track and appurtenances including right-of-way maintenance as required as well as installs rail ties.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
:

. Loads and unloads materials (ballast and ties) and clears brush and debris from railway
. Handles materials manually as needed at work the site- such as ties, switch timber, switch materials, tie plates, spikes, and rail anchors
. Operates ventilation trucks to clear fumes from tunnels in accordance with FRA/Amtrak safety respiratory program
. Walks and inspects right of way including enclosed areas such as tunnels, station tracks above ground level or occasionally on such structures as open deck bridges
. Works within the guidelines of Amtrak’s System Safety Program
. Operates company vehicles on a as needed basis in performance of duties
. Performs watchman duties when assigned
. May work as an extra member of a gang when required based on work assignments
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

. Must have high school diploma or equivalent combination of training, education and or experience
. Ability to pass required training with written exams including two weeks of safety training
. CSX operating rules knowledge
. Reliable attendance and timeliness in reporting to work
. Construction experience and heavy equipment operation experience preferred
. Experience as a general laborer preferred
. Must have a valid driver’s license on date of hire


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
:

. Must be able to lift 50lbs
. Upon hire, ability to pass required training with written exams, including 2 weeks of safety training
. Able to work in conditions that include, loud noise and fumes, work on and around heavy and moving machinery, bend, walk, stand and sit for extended periods of time and use hand tools.


COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
:

Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.


The hourly rate is $27.85 - $30.94 (with opportunity for increases, as per the applicable collective bargaining agreement, after beginning employment). In accordance with DOT regulations (49 CFR § 40.25), Amtrak is required to obtain prior drug and alcohol testing records for applicants/employees intending to perform safety-sensitive duties for covered Department of Transportation positions. If an applicant/employee refuses to provide written consent for Amtrak to obtain these records, the individual will not be permitted to perform safety-sensitive functions.


In accordance with federal law governing security checks of covered individuals for public transportation ( Title 6 U.S.C. § 1143), Amtrak is required to screen applicants for any permanent or interim disqualifying criminal offenses.
